🚨 The U.S. is borrowing record amounts of money just to pay off its old debt.
Last week, the U.S. Treasury sold a record $839,000,000,000 in government debt, the largest amount ever sold in a single auction week. But what's concerning is where most of that money went.
Out of the $839 billion, around $733 billion was used to replace debt that was already coming due. Only $106 billion was raised as new cash.
$626 billion of the total came from short-term Treasury bills, which have to be paid back within a year. This means the government has to keep borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars as its existing debt comes due.
Meanwhile, America's national debt has already reached $40.6 trillion, and the government is still adding more.
The bigger risk is that if investors start demanding higher interest rates like they have done in 2026, the U.S. will have to pay more to borrow the same amount of money.
