MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLANS - What they don’t tell you, might make you sick!!!
We do offer and enroll many clients into Medicare Advantage plans, and for some people they may be the right fit, for example lower income when additional subsidies and benefits may be available these plans are truly life savers.
However, we believe consumers deserve to also fully understand the disadvantages before making a decision that could impact their healthcare for years to come. Many advertisements focus only on the “extra benefits” while failing to explain the long-term risks and limitations.
Here are five of the biggest reasons many people choose to avoid Medicare Advantage plans:
1. You lose control over your healthcare decisions and become part of a managed care system. Insurance companies often control approvals, treatments, testing, and access to specialists. Your doctor may recommend care, but the insurance company frequently has the final say.
2. Higher out-of-pocket costs. While some Medicare Advantage plans advertise low or even $0 premiums, the real costs can come later through copays, coinsurance, hospital bills, specialist visits, chemotherapy costs, and maximum out-of-pocket exposure that can reach thousands of dollars annually.
3. Limited provider networks and usually no access to MD Anderson or Mayo Clinic. Most Medicare Advantage plans operate with restrictive HMO networks. If having access to the nation’s top cancer facilities matters to you, this is critical. Want access to MD Anderson because you are younger, have a family history of cancer, or simply want the best options available? In most Medicare Advantage plans, that is simply not happening.
4. Referrals are often required. Many plans require referrals and prior authorizations before seeing specialists or receiving certain procedures. This can delay care and create unnecessary headaches during serious health situations.
5. After your initial Medicare enrollment period and the first 12 months in most situations, you will have to medically qualify to switch to a Medicare Supplement plan later. If you develop cancer, heart disease, or another serious condition, you will likely be DENIED coverage and stuck on a Medicare Advantage Plan for LIFE. Many people do not realize this until it is too late.
Choose wisely.
Do your homework.
Compare positive AND negative points.
Everything comes with a trade off.
Remember the old saying “no such thing as a free lunch?” Sometimes this is the case with insurnace also.
If you have certain disabilities, low income, or Medicaid eligible these disadvantages might not apply to you and Medicare Advantage might be a life saver we would absolutely recommend.
If you are new to Medicare or medically qualify and can afford a Medicare supplement you need to understand the future risks and disadvantages seldom discussed about Medicare Advantage Plans.
The lowest or no cost option today is not always the lowest cost or most beneficial option long term.
