Every August it's the same rhythm. Summer winds down, school starts back up, and every business owner I know flips a switch into fall mode.

Before that happens, here's a suggestion from someone who watches the fourth quarter arrive every year: walk into fall with clean numbers.

Three questions worth answering this month:
Where does your tax estimate stand? Two-thirds of the year is already on the books. A projection now means you can still do something about it. In December, you're mostly just finding out.
Did the first half change anything? A strong or slow start to the year should show up somewhere: in your retirement contributions, your cash reserves, your plans for the business. If nothing changed in your plan, check whether that's a decision or an oversight.
What's the one thing you promised yourself you'd handle in 2026? The estate documents. The 529. The insurance review. There's still time, but only if it gets on the calendar now.
Thirty minutes in August saves a scramble in November. I've seen it play out both ways more times than I can count.

Book a call and let's get your picture current before the season turns.

Roth vs. Traditional: Here's the Simple Way I Explain It

This question still comes up at almost every lunch I have with a business owner.
"Should I be doing Roth or traditional?"
I answer it with a question: "Do you think your tax rate will be higher now or higher when you retire?"

If higher now, go traditional. Take the deduction today.
If higher in retirement, go Roth. Pay the tax now, get tax-free income later.
If you genuinely don't know, go Roth. Tax-free income in retirement is a very good problem not to have.

For business owners, there's an extra layer, and it works in your favor. Your income moves with the business. High-revenue years favor traditional contributions. Slow quarters and transition years open windows for Roth conversions.
And holding both types of accounts gives you the most valuable thing in retirement planning: the ability to choose which bucket to draw from, year by year, based on your tax situation at the time.

Most people set this up once and never look at it again. Your situation changes. Your strategy should too.
Book a call and let's make sure your plan still makes sense for where you are.

Lunch at Bar La Grassa. One line I won't forget.

Had lunch yesterday at Bar La Grassa with a business owner I've been wanting to sit down with for a while. 60 years old. 28 years building her company.
Sharp as anyone I've met. About halfway through the meal she said: "I never planned my exit because I never planned to leave." I've been thinking about that line ever since. There's a version of this story that ends well — she still has time, and she knows it. We talked through what the next 3 to 5 years could look like if she starts now. But there's another version where that line gets said at 67, or 70, and the options are a lot narrower.
The best time to start is before you feel like you need to. If you're a business owner in Minnesota and you've been putting this conversation off — I'm buying lunch. Reach out.

"I never planned my exit because I never planned to leave."

Had a conversation with a 60-year-old business owner yesterday.
She's built something real over 30 years. Good revenue. Loyal clients. A team that runs well.
And she said something that stuck with me:
"I never planned my exit because I never planned to leave."
She wasn't saying it proudly. She was saying it like someone who had just realized what it meant. The business she loves is also the reason she doesn't have a plan for what comes next. They became the same thing somewhere along the way.
I hear versions of this more than almost anything else.
The owners who are most prepared for the future aren't the ones who want to leave.
They're the ones who decided to plan anyway — while they still had time to do it right. If this sounds familiar, it might be worth a conversation.

The #1 question at every business roundtable I go to.

Attended a local business roundtable last week. Different industries, different sizes, different stages. But the #1 topic that came up? "How do I find a financial advisor I actually trust?" Not "how do I grow my portfolio." Not "what's the market going to do." Trust. That was the word that kept coming up. My honest answer: look for someone who asks more questions than they answer in the first meeting. Look for someone who tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. And look for someone whose clients actually stay. Then I thought about H1. Six months in. The clients who are winning right now aren't the ones doing the most. They're doing fewer things — but doing them well. Most of those decisions got made over a meal, not in a formal meeting.

Simplicity scales. So does a 90-minute lunch. If you're still looking for that advisor — or just want a second opinion — I'm around all summer. Reach out.
