Việt Nam under pressure to scale up battery storage to support renewable growth

--------
Việt Nam is under pressure to position battery energy storage systems (BESS) as strategic energy infrastructure, as fast-growing renewable capacity highlights grid stability challenges and opens up a multi-billion-dollar market for domestic firms.

Việt Nam is coming under growing pressure to make battery energy storage systems (BESS) a cornerstone of its power infrastructure, as rapid renewable expansion and rising electricity demand, driven by double-digit economic growth, expose mounting strain on the national grid.

The global energy landscape is shifting quickly. The transition to green energy is moving into a new phase, from rapid expansion of renewable generation towards strengthening storage capacity to ensure system flexibility and grid reliability.

In Việt Nam, renewable energy has expanded rapidly in recent years, laying the foundation for the country’s green transition but without sufficient storage capacity, renewable power cannot be fully utilised to support long-term economic growth.

Analysts say the next phase of the energy transition will depend less on how much renewable power is added and more on how effectively it can be stored and dispatched.

“BESS should be seen as essential infrastructure, not just a supporting technology,” said Phan Công Tiến, director of the Institute of Smart Energy Application Research (iSEAR). “Without storage, it will be difficult to increase the share of renewables while maintaining system stability.”

Market shortfall

Việt Nam’s energy storage sector could reach about US$6 billion by 2030, reflecting national energy development goals under the Politburo’s Resolution 70-NQ/TW on ensuring energy security to 2030 with a vision to 2045 and the revised eighth Power Development Plan (PDP8).

However, current deployment remains limited. As of early 2025, installed BESS capacity is estimated at under 100 MW, far below the PDP8 target of 10,000 to 16,300 MW by 2030.

The shortfall highlights a key challenge: without a rapid scale-up in storage, the broader energy transition will struggle to deliver.

According to Deputy Director General of the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) Nguyễn Quốc Trung, electricity demand in Việt Nam is expected to continue rising sharply in the coming years, driven by double-digit growth targets, digital transformation and a rapid electrification trend.

Việt Nam is under pressure to position battery energy storage systems (BESS) as strategic energy infrastructure, as fast-growing renewable capacity highlights grid stability challenges and opens up a multi-billion-dollar market for domestic firms.

Việt Nam, Argentina step up cooperation, push for early PTA with MERCOSUR

-------
Việt Nam and Argentina are accelerating trade ties and pushing for an early preferential trade deal with MERCOSUR.

Việt Nam and Argentina are stepping up economic and trade cooperation, with both sides seeking to soon conclude a preferential trade agreement (PTA) between Việt Nam and MERCOSUR, the South American customs bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, as momentum builds towards a more structured trade framework.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thị Thắng held an online meeting on Friday with Fernando Brun, Secretary for International Economic Relations at Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, to review bilateral progress and discuss cooperation prospects for 2026.

According to Việt Nam’s customs data, two-way trade reached about US$4.3 billion in 2025, up 4.1 per cent year on year. Việt Nam’s exports totalled nearly $877 million, up 68.7 per cent, while imports stood at $3.4 billion, down 5.3 per cent. Argentina is currently Việt Nam’s third-largest trading partner in Latin America.

Việt Nam mainly exports phones and components, computers and electronics, footwear, machinery and textile materials while importing maize, animal feed, cotton, soybeans and vegetable and animal oils.

Against this backdrop, both sides are working to establish a more stable and predictable trade framework. Thắng welcomed the launch of Việt Nam–MERCOSUR PTA negotiations in December 2025 and urged Argentina, as MERCOSUR coordinator, to help accelerate talks towards an early conclusion.

She also updated the Argentine side on the implementation of outcomes from the eighth session of the Việt Nam–Argentina Intergovernmental Committee on economic, trade and scientific-technological cooperation.

These include the completion of the first round of negotiations on a double taxation avoidance agreement, as well as ongoing discussions on market access for agricultural products and intellectual property.

To further boost trade, investment and business connectivity, Thắng called on Argentina to send business delegations to major trade promotion events in Việt Nam, particularly the Vietnam International Sourcing Expo scheduled for September 2026.

For his part, Brun affirmed that Việt Nam is a priority partner in Argentina’s Look East policy in the Asia–Pacific. He added that Argentina is considering applying to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

He pledged close coordination to advance PTA negotiations with MERCOSUR in the coming period.

Việt Nam urges exporters to diversify markets as Egypt tightens steel import duties

--
Egypt has issued a series of decisions to impose definitive safeguard duties on imports of cold-rolled steel, coated and color-coated steel, hot-rolled steel and steel billets.

In response to Egypt’s imposition of safeguard measures on a wide range of imported steel products, the Trade Remedies Authority of Vietnam under the Ministry of Industry and Trade has advised domestic exporters to take proactive steps to mitigate risks.

Businesses are urged to review product categories to identify potential exemptions, particularly for steel products with specific technical specifications.

They should also reassess business efficiency, especially for steel billets, as minimum duty levels could significantly impact competitiveness.

The authority emphasised the need to closely monitor Egypt’s periodic reviews of these measures and maintain regular contact with import partners to stay updated on market developments and, where appropriate, seek adjustments.

Amid rising global trade protectionism, exporters are encouraged to diversify markets and leverage free trade agreements to reduce reliance on any single destination.

According to the authority, Egypt has issued a series of decisions to impose definitive safeguard duties on imports of cold-rolled steel, coated and color-coated steel, hot-rolled steel and steel billets, following findings of a sharp surge in imports that caused serious injury to domestic producers.

Under the new measures, Egypt applies combined tariffs that include percentage-based import duties along with minimum fixed charges on affected products, with rates set to gradually decline over a three-year period starting from April 2 this year.

For cold-rolled steel (CRC), duties are set at 13.7 per cent of CIF value (minimum US$83 per tonne) in the initial phase through September 13, before easing to 13 per cent (minimum $79 per tonne) and 12.5 per cent (minimum $76 per tonne) in subsequent periods.

Galvanised steel (HDG/GI) is subject to duties of 14 per cent (minimum $93 per tonne) in the first phase, declining to 13.5 per cent (minimum $90 per tonne) and 13 per cent (minimum $86 per tonne) over the following two years.

Pre-painted steel (PPGI) faces the highest rates, starting at 14.5 per cent (minimum $122 per tonne), then gradually decreasing to 14 per cent (minimum $118 per tonne) and 13.5 per cent (minimum $114 per tonne).

Hot-rolled steel (HRC/HRFS) is subject to safeguard duties of 13.6 per cent (minimum $76 per tonne) in the initial phase, tapering slightly to 13.5 per cent and 13.4 per cent, with corresponding minimum thresholds of $75 and $74 per tonne.

Meanwhile, steel billets, which are semi-finished products widely used in downstream steel production, are subject to duties starting at 13.12 per cent (minimum $70 per tonne), falling to 12 per cent (minimum $64 per tonne) and 11 per cent (minimum $59 per tonne) over the three-year period.

Việt Nam’s iron and steel exports rose in the first quarter of 2026, with shipments reaching more than 2.9 million tonnes and export turnover of US$1.7 billion, up 6.9 per cent in volume and 4.18 per cent in value year-on-year, according to the Việt Nam Customs Department.
