📢 NEWSLETTER | PIT deductions for medical and education expenses from 1 July 2026 - Hanoi Tax Authority's guidance in Official Letter No. 47199/HAN-QLDN5
From 1 July 2026, resident individuals earning income from salaries and wages may claim deductions for certain medical examination and treatment expenses and education and training expenses incurred for themselves and their dependants when calculating Personal Income Tax. The maximum deduction is VND 23 million per year for medical expenses and VND 24 million per year for education and training expenses.
However, to qualify for the deductions, the expenses must be supported by valid invoices and documents containing the information of the taxpayer or dependant. Medical expenses must also be accompanied by a detailed statement of medical examination and treatment costs. In addition, amounts already paid or reimbursed by organisations, insurance providers, the State budget or other sources are not eligible for further deduction.
Notably, employees who wish to claim these deductions must directly conduct their PIT finalisation and are not permitted to authorise the enterprise to finalise PIT on their behalf. Deductions arising in a particular year may only be claimed for that year and cannot be carried forward to subsequent years.
