🚨 FRAUD TIP FRIDAY 🚨

You receive a payment notification.

A stranger just sent you money.

A few minutes later, a message arrives:

"I'm so sorry. I sent that by mistake. Can you send it back?"

Most people want to help.

That's exactly what scammers count on.

Here's how the scam works:

1️⃣ Money appears in your account.
2️⃣ The sender says it was a mistake.
3️⃣ You send the money back.
4️⃣ The original payment is later reversed.
5️⃣ The money you sent is gone.

Before sending money to anyone:

βœ… Verify the transaction
βœ… Contact the payment platform
βœ… Never let urgency make the decision
βœ… Take time to investigate

Scammers often target good people trying to do the right thing.

Protect yourself first.

Does the Message Feel Off? Trust the Pause. 🚩

An online message deserves a closer look when it includes:

🚨 An urgent deadline
πŸ”— An unfamiliar link
🎁 An unexpected prize
πŸ’³ An unusual payment request
πŸ” A request for login details or security codes
πŸ’» A request for remote access
🧾 A receipt for something you did not buy
πŸ“± An unusual message from someone you know

Scammers may copy trusted logos, create fake websites, take over social media accounts, or send false receipts. A message may look real while being designed to steal money, banking information, passwords, or personal details.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency lists suspicious websites, unrealistic offers, false receipts, unusual messages, and remote-access requests among the warning signs of online and digital scams.

Before responding, ask:

Was I expecting this?
Why is the sender creating urgency?
Can I verify the request another way?
Open the official app, type the correct website address into your browser, or call a verified number you find independently.

Do not let urgency make the decision for you.

🚨 FRAUD TIP FRIDAY 🚨

The phone rings.

The caller says they're from your bank.

They tell you your account is at risk and you need to act immediately.

Would you know what to do?

Here's something every Virgin Islands resident should remember:

Your Bank Will NEVER Ask You To:

❌ Share your online banking password
❌ Share a security code sent to your phone
❌ Move your money to a "safe account"
❌ Buy gift cards to stop fraud
❌ Share your debit card PIN
❌ Send cash to protect your account
❌ Rush into a financial decision

Scammers want panic.

Your bank wants protection.

If something feels wrong, hang up and contact your bank directly using a trusted phone number.

πŸ“Œ SAVE this post.
πŸ“² SHARE it with family, friends, parents, grandparents, and neighbors.
πŸ’‘ The more people who know these warning signs, the safer our island community becomes.

Online Scams Can Look Surprisingly Real

Online and digital scams happen when fraudsters use emails, text messages, websites, online ads, or social media to steal money or personal information.

A fraudulent message may appear to come from your bank, a familiar store, a delivery service, a technology company, or someone you know. A trusted logo or familiar name does not prove the message is legitimate.

Three common online scams include:

🎣 Phishing scams- A fraudulent email or text asks you to click a link, download an attachment, or enter personal or banking information.

πŸ›’ Fake online shopping websites- A fraudulent website advertises products, collects payment, and never delivers the items. Some websites may send a different or poor-quality product.

πŸ’» Tech support scams- A scammer claims your computer or mobile device has a virus or security problem. The scammer may request payment, ask you to install software, or try to gain remote access to your device.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency identifies phishing messages, fake e-commerce sites, and fraudulent tech support requests as common types of online and digital scams.

Remember this simple rule:
Unexpected message + urgent request + link, payment, or information request = stop and verify.

Do not use the phone number, link, or website supplied in a suspicious message. Open the company’s official app, type the verified website address into your browser, or call a trusted number you find independently.

Never send passwords, verification codes, account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other confidential information through email, social media, or an online contact form. Bank of St. Croix advises customers not to send confidential information through electronic communications.

🍎 Think back to a teacher you'll never forget.

Maybe it was the teacher who encouraged you to keep going when something felt difficult.

The teacher who helped you believe in yourself.

On World Teachers' Day, Bank of St. Croix proudly celebrates the educators who inspire students, strengthen schools, and help shape the future of St. Croix.
