For Stefan Guevara, working in compliance means protecting far more than a companyโs reputation. It means safeguarding customers, strengthening the insurance sector and helping to preserve the integrity of the British Virgin Islandsโ financial services industry.
Stefan joined NAGICO nine months ago as a Money Laundering Reporting Officer, attracted by the opportunity to expand his compliance experience within the insurance sector while contributing to one of the Caribbeanโs leading insurance companies.
โAs Compliance Officer, my day is centred on ensuring that the company and its clients are protected from individuals who may seek to bring the organisation, the sector and the BVI into financial disrepute,โ Stefan explained.
โI am motivated by that responsibility, and each day gives me another opportunity to reinforce that passion.โ
While customers may sometimes view compliance as a process involving additional questions, information and documentation, Stefan said every request serves an important purpose.
โI am really working to protect the client by ensuring that we only conduct business with reputable customers,โ he said.
His role also supports NAGICOโs promise of protecting people, families and businesses by ensuring the company remains law-abiding, diligent and capable of meeting the highest regulatory and reputational standards.
During challenging circumstances, Stefan draws on his experience to assess each customerโs situation individually and provide the flexibility needed to address their concerns.

โIt means that the customer can rest assured that both their business and well-being are in good hands,โ he said.
One of Stefanโs proudest moments at NAGICO came when the company hosted its Annual Walk/Run and raised funds for the Youth Empowerment Programme, YEP.
"โThat was a proud moment because we were investing in our future leaders,โ he reflected.
NAGICOโs continued support for charitable organisations and community causes has also strengthened Stefanโs desire to give back. Hence, he is committed to making a difference in the BVI community as a member of the Rotary Club of Central Tortola.
Outside of work, he is passionate about fitness and enjoys spending time in the gym.
Professionally, his experience at NAGICO has exposed him to new insurance products and services, as well as evolving laws and regulations, helping him to broaden his knowledge and build his professional capacity. Personally, working alongside colleagues from different cultures and backgrounds has also helped him grow socially.
Looking ahead, Stefan believes NAGICOโs continued regional success will be driven by its ability to adapt to new industry trends, invest in leadership and mentorship, strengthen succession planning and provide employees with opportunities for training and advancement.
