Earlier this month, I turned 50.

I had one goal: to walk into 50 feeling like the healthiest, strongest version of myself.

In February 2023, my world changed when my mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of colon cancer. It made me take a hard look at my health. I committed to losing the 60 lbs I’d gained during the COVID crazy-busy years. I worked hard and watched what I put into my body.

Then life said, “Cute plan, Gigi.” 😂

A few months ago, I was scuba diving—one of the things I LOVE most—when I experienced excruciating pain. Imagine being 80 feet underwater when shooting pain suddenly runs down both arms.

And one thought scared me: What if I can’t do what I love anymore?

Fast-forward to this week, and I found out I need disc replacement surgery on two discs in my neck that are pinching a nerve. The doctors asked, “How have you not been in massive pain? This did not just start happening to your body.”

Not exactly what I pictured for 50.

But here’s what 50 taught me.

I’ve been knocked down plenty of times, sometimes pretty damn hard. And every time, I’ve gotten back up and kept going.

Okay… maybe I’ve wanted to kick whoever knocked me down right back in the teeth. 😉 But that’s a different Gigi Perspective.

Being “healthy” isn’t just about the scale, how much you can lift, what you eat, or how disciplined you are.

Sometimes it means being strong enough to handle what you can’t control.

And maybe the bigger lesson is this:

Stop waiting for everything to be perfect before you enjoy your life.

Love the people around you. Make time for the people who make time for you. Do what makes you feel alive. Take the trip. Get in the picture. Say “I love you.”

And for God’s sake…

EAT THE DAMN CAKE. 🎂

If you want the cake, eat it. None of us is promised tomorrow, and I don’t want to prepare for tomorrow while forgetting to live today.

So I’m walking into 50 a little differently than I planned.

Maybe not with the health I envisioned.

But grateful. Loved. A little beat up. Still stubborn as hell. And planning on getting back underwater.
