We recently had a chance to attend a luncheon in Houston, TX with the delegation from the Ukrainian Defenders Leadership Center which is a pioneering university-based initiative at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Kyiv. Launched in 2024, it helps veterans transition from military service to civilian, professional, and civic leadership roles to support Ukraine's long-term recovery.

Speaking that day were Hennadii Sukharnikov, a Ukrainian military veteran and former prisoner of war who serves as Head of Partnerships for the Azov Brigade, and Mykhailo Onufer, a Ukrainian military veteran who now serves as Chief Veterans Officer at Aurora Multimarket, where he works to expand employment and reintegration opportunities for veterans returning from active duty.

Both speakers were a part of a delegation of Ukrainian veterans visiting Houston through the U.S. Congress’s Open World Leadership Program to learn from American veteran-support organizations and bring practical models for arts-based recovery programs back to Ukraine.

Our Houston-based SUMA FCU team member, Svitlana, also had the pleasure to meet with other members of the delegation: Maryna Khromykh - Advocacy Officer; Oleksii Prytula - Deputy Director of Superhumans War Trauma Center; Mykola Kuznietson, MD – Tactical Medicine, Course Director, as well as attendees Bryan Escobedo, Chief Growth Officer from Combined Arms, a veteran-founded organization in Houston; and Walter Urlich, President & CEO of Medical Bridges, a Houston-based organization that has already delivered over $20 million worth of vital medical supplies and equipment to support soldiers, civilians and frontline healthcare facilities in war-torn Ukraine.

We congratulate and thank everyone for all their continued efforts to assist Ukraine, assist Ukraine’s defenders, and assist Ukrainian citizens as they fight against the savage russian invaders.

🇺🇸 As we suffer through all the wind and rain this weekend, we wanted to bring back a hint of summer and congratulate two local Ukrainian soccer teams that SUMA FCU sponsors:

1) FC Dynamo NY are officially the 2026 EDSL Summer League Champions! The EDSL 11v11 league plays in Westchester and FC Dynamo NY continues to provide a team where so many Ukrainian and CYM-connected players can compete together. With summer vacations, work schedules, and other commitments, there were games where they had exactly 11 players available and other weeks they had close to 20 players ready to go. No matter who was available on a given Sunday, everyone who put on the FC Dynamo jersey gave 100% and represented the team and Ukrainian community with pride. We congratulate them on their victory!

2) FC Krylati Yonkers competed in the “Great Lakes Cup 2026”, the annual Ukrainian Diaspora Soccer Tournament, held May 22-24 in Cleveland, OH with teams competing from the United States & Canada. The teams included: our local FC Krylati Yonkers, NY; FC Lions Stamford, CT; FC Nova Cleveland; FC Halychyna Toronto; FC Connection Chicago; FC Hoverla Detroit; FC Lions Rochester, NY; FC Hammers Chicago; FC Lions Chicago; and FC Salo United Toronto. The tournament featured two age brackets with all the FC Krylati teams successfully making it deep into the tournament. We congratulate all the players and teams on another successful tournament. Fantastic to see the teams, most of which are almost entirely fielded by Ukrainian players, all gather to make friends and memories annually.

🇺🇦 Оскільки цього вікенду нам доводиться терпіти сильний вітер і дощ, ми хотіли б повернути хоч трохи літнього настрою та привітати дві місцеві українські футбольні команди, спонсором яких є ФКК СУМА:

1) ФК «Динамо Нью-Йорк» офіційно став чемпіоном Літньої ліги EDSL 2026 року! Ліга EDSL 11 на 11 проводить матчі у Вестчестері, а ФК «Динамо Нью-Йорк» продовжує створювати команду, в якій так багато українських гравців, та гравців пов’язаних із CYM, можуть грати разом. Через літні канікули, робочі графіки та інші зобов’язання були матчі, на які у них було рівно 11 гравців, а в інші тижні — майже 20 гравців, готових вийти на поле. Незалежно від того, хто був у наявності в ту чи іншу неділю, кожен, хто одягав футболку ФК «Динамо Нью-Йорк», віддавав 100% сил і з гордістю представляв команду та українську громаду. Ми вітаємо їх із перемогою!

2) ФК «Крилаті» (Йонкерс) взяв участь у «Кубку Великих Озер 2026» — щорічному футбольному турнірі української діаспори, який відбувся 22–24 травня в Клівленді, штат Огайо, за участю команд зі США та Канади. Серед команд були: наш місцевий ФК «Крилаті» (Йонкерс, штат Нью-Йорк); ФК «Леви» (Стемфорд, штат Коннектикут); ФК «Нова» (Клівленд); ФК «Галичина» (Торонто); ФК «Коннекшн» (Чикаго); ФК «Говерла» (Детройт); ФК «Леви» (Рочестер, штат Нью-Йорк); ФК «Хаммерс» (Чикаго); ФК «Леви» (Чикаго); та ФК «Сало Юнайтед» (Торонто). Турнір проходив у двох вікових категоріях, і всі команди «Крилаті» успішно пройшли далеко в турнірній сітці. Ми вітаємо всіх гравців та команди з черговим успішним турніром. Чудово бачити, як ці команди, більшість з яких майже повністю складаються з українських гравців, щороку збираються разом, щоб завести друзів і створити незабутні спогади.

🇺🇸 Yesterday, Walter Kozicky, SUMA’s co-founder and director-emeritus, celebrated his 102nd birthday!

The number 102 carries significant meanings in various contexts, particularly in numerology and spirituality. It symbolizes creative self-expression, independence, and social interaction. Additionally, it represents balance, new beginnings, and trust in the journey of life…to those that know Mr. Kozicky, we clearly see and are in awe of how he exemplifies each of these characteristics.

All of us at SUMA FCU dearly wish him the happiest of birthdays with family and friends and hope he continues being an inspiration and mentor to all of us for many, many years to come.

Число 102 має важливе значення в різних контекстах, зокрема в нумерології та духовності. Воно символізує творче самовираження, незалежність та соціальну взаємодію. Крім того, воно уособлює рівновагу, нові починання та віру в життєвий шлях… Ті, хто знає пана Козіцького, чітко бачать і захоплюються тим, як він втілює кожну з цих рис.

🇺🇸 We are proud to have co-sponsored Tuesday nights's special Ukrainian Independence Day Reception organized by the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN. The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America assisted with the event which was held at the stately Ukrainian Institute of America in NYC.

Ambassador Andriy Melnyk - Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, addressed all in attendance and thanked the other ambassadors/consuls for their support of Ukraine in its time of greatest need. Rosemary Anne DiCarlo, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, discussed her visits and support of Ukraine. Andrij Dobriansky MC’d the event. Afterwards, fantastic Ukrainian food and music filled rooms for all the guests.

We thank all the UN diplomats from around the world who continue to support Ukraine at its greatest time of need as well as all the organizations and members of the Ukrainian American community who were also in attendance this evening.

Andrij, SUMA FCU CEO, represented us at the lovely celebration of Ukrainian Independence.

🇺🇦 Ми пишаємося тим, що виступили одним із спонсорів вівторка урочистого прийому з нагоди Дня Незалежності України , організованого Постійним представництвом України при ООН. Український Конгресовий Комітет Америки надав допомогу в проведенні заходу, який відбувся у величному Українському інституті Америки в Нью-Йорку.

Посол Андрій Мельник — Постійний представник України при ООН — виступив перед усіма присутніми та подякував іншим послам і консулам за підтримку України в час, коли вона її найбільше потребує. Розмарі Енн ДіКарло, заступниця Генерального секретаря ООН з політичних питань та питань миротворчості, розповіла про свої візити до України та про надану нею підтримку. Андрій Добрянський виступив ведучим заходу. Після цього гостей чекали чудові українські страви та музика, які наповнили зали.

Ми дякуємо всім дипломатам ООН з усього світу, які продовжують підтримувати Україну в найважчі часи, а також усім організаціям та членам українсько-американської громади, які також були присутні цього вечора.
