You've probably heard the term "key date rarity" thrown around, but what does it actually mean? In short: certain years and mint marks were produced in much smaller quantities, making them significantly more valuable than their common-date counterparts. A 1921 Morgan and an 1893-S Morgan are both Morgan Dollars, but one is worth $30 and the other can fetch $50,000+.

And sometimes it wasn’t just about low mintage; government melting programs wiped out huge populations of coins that were once common. We call these "survival rarities," not key date rarities.
