When the weather is just right for planting soybeans, farmers have to be prepared for long hours and fast paced operations. Here Fran and Fred watched Farmer Phillip with P&H Hess Farms using a speed disc to till or work up the ground in preparation for planting their beans. Beans need to go in the ground when the moisture level is right. This was a nice sunny day to do that.

Fred and Fran had the opportunity to meet Arkansas Farm Bureau President Dan Wright when he visited Cross County Farm Bureau during their board meeting yesterday. They even caught a ride back to Little Rock and the western side of the state to have some adventures with Mr Wright and learn about agriculture in other parts of Arkansas.

President Wright spoke of the work being carried out daily on the behalf of Arkansas farmers and ranchers by Arkansas Farm Bureau. The needs from corner to corner of the state vary greatly, but Farm Bureau helps set policies that impact everyone in the state. He praised the ability of farmers and ranchers to handle struggles and come out stronger. He emphasized the importance of communication between farmers and ranchers communicating with local, state and federal governments and agencies to give an accurate picture of the current farm economy.

Fred and Fran tagged along with Arkansas Farm Bureau Women's Leadership committee member Margie Raimondo while she attend American Farm Bureau Federation Women’s Communications Boot Camp in Washington, DC. They were able to tour the nation’s capitol, listen in on congressional meetings discussing the farm bill and learned how to be better communicators. Farm Bureau offers many programs to help farmers and ranchers grow both on and off the farm.

Fred and Fran take on wheat scouting. While there’s not a lot of wheat in the county, just like any other crop, wheat has to be scouted and monitored for disease and insect pressure. This wheat field is starting to head out, which means it’s growing closer to full maturity but is still a little ways off. The heads will slowly start to fill out and move from a milky stage to a dough stage before it matures completely, which is typically in late May or early June when wheat harvest begins. Farmers must keep a watch on their crops to ensure that insects and disease do not attack their fields during these critical stages, which can lead to yield loss and less profit in the farmers pocket.
