Who was James A. Jones?

James A. Jones (1803-1894) was a prominent businessman in Chestertown Maryland. He was a grocer, butcher and owned several parcels of land. Ratification of the 15th Amendment (1870) gave African American men the right to vote. However, the local elections in Chestertown required voters to own land. James A. Jones and another affluent businessman, Issac Anderson, changed the course of history by selling portions of their land to African American men. James A. Jones sold one square foot of land to 44 men for 25 cents each ensuring their right to vote.

It just so happens that James A. Jones was the great-great-great grandfather of Lisa Jones, our classmate, from the Kent County High School Class of 1978! Learning about this connection to our class was one of the things that inspired Monique Odell-Pinelli to pursue creation of the scholarship.

What inspired the creation of the James A. Jones "I Can, We Can" Scholarship?

While reflecting on the murder of George Floyd and the continued observations of our culture’s systemic racial injustices, Monique Odell-Pinelli was sparked to action. The idea of supporting students in the pursuit of their dreams through a scholarship caught the attention and interest of her classmates. She pulled together a committee (Alma Hackett-White, Kim Briscoe-Moody, Linda Hopkins, Lisa Jones, Peter Gates and Sharon Smith-Lunn) that has been working to bring her vision of a scholarship to fruition.

The six classmates have been meeting and working over the past 7 months to create the scholarship. Funds have already been raised for a Spring 2021 award to two Kent County High School African American graduates, one male and one female, who plan to continue their education at a vocational/trade school, performing arts school or college/university.
