What does it mean to be there for someone during life’s most difficult moments?

For Michael Hedges, Ecumen spiritual counselor, it means listening without judgment, helping families find peace and offering comfort when it’s needed most. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sharing a cup of coffee with someone who is grieving.

This Spiritual Care Week (October 18–24), we celebrate Michael and all spiritual counselors who make a meaningful difference for patients and their families.

💚 Read Michael’s story to learn how spiritual care brings comfort and peace when it matters most.

We're proud to announce a new partnership between Ecumen and the University of Minnesota School of Nursing.

Together, we've established a nursing Collaboratory focused on advancing aging services, supporting nursing education, and developing innovative solutions that improve the lives of older adults.

This partnership brings academic research and real-world care experience together to help prepare future nursing professionals while continuing to enhance the quality of care and services across Ecumen communities.

Thank you to the team members, residents, board members, and University of Minnesota collaborators who helped make this vision a reality. We look forward to what we'll accomplish together as we continue supporting people as they age.

Thank you to Scott Rosenberg, the City of Worthington Tree Forester, for coming out to speak at our Community Coffee event! Scott put together a really fantastic and informative presentation on the Emerald Ash Borer. He even brought along bark samples, larvae, and bugs so we could see the damage firsthand.

Scott shared some really interesting facts about how this pest is impacting our town. For instance, because the lake froze safely this past winter, city crews were able to get out onto the ice and completely clear all the infested ash trees along the shorelines of Lake Okabena and Sunset Bay. He also shared that typically within two years of showing damage, the trees start to fall over, which is a big damage risk to nearby structures as well as injuries or even death to people and animals, if they happen to be close by when the tree falls.

It is a massive undertaking. Worthington has lost over 1,500 Ash trees in our public land and parks alone! Before the infestation, the city managed about 7,500 trees, but because of the pest and an aggressive 10-year removal plan, that number is now down to around 6,000.

Scott explained that our city trees used to be about one-third Ash and one-third Maple. Having so many Maple trees create a big risk if another species-specific bug comes along, so the city has stopped planting Maple trees on boulevards and set a strict 10% limit on any single tree species to make sure our city trees stay diverse and healthy.

We really appreciate Scott taking the time to educate us, and we're so grateful for the hard work he and his team are doing to tackle this problem and replant new trees to keep Worthington beautiful!

Last week's gloomy weather couldn't stop us from having fun during our monthly watercolor class! We brightened up the day by painting the happiest yellow sunflowers, and we even snacked on treats from a super cute sunflower bouquet while our masterpieces dried.
