Pro tip: if you minimalize distractions, cast more, and fish with an open mind, you will catch more and bigger fish.

Musky fishing includes the highest of highs and lowest of lows. I lack recourses up here and have had to do strange things to stay consistently on fish. Honestly was considering flying home and fishing rivers im comfortable with when I arrived. Awesome seeing patterns come together on new water. Anxious to see what the rest of the fall holds here in northern Maine!

first musky I’ve ever done caught on a flyrod. By far the scariest capture of my life. I remember stopping one last time at a spot we caught fish earlier in the week. I opened the tailgate to my tan mini van, almost grabbed the rod with my Bucktail on it.

Something inside me said bring the flyrod as well, you know what? Screw it. Bring just the flyrod.

There were people swimming where I normally access my spot, so I had to meander through the woods and take a different way. This set me up right in the corner where this absolute monstrosity was lying behind a boulder, ready to ambush the next fish that crossed her path.

After a few casts, I had a feeling a musky was going to show herself and she rose up out of nowhere like an actual ghost.

I was waist deep in the water and basically just pivoted my body while spewing my fly up. She loved it, couldn’t take it anymore, opened her mouth, and the rest is history.

Bigger than both my 49.5 inch fish I’ve actually measured. Her actual dimensions will forever be unknown but this fish was a size magnum that’s for certain :)

Saw a bunch of smallies in the hole above this deep spot all congregated. 10 yards down, the bank dropped off quick and the bass were hiding up in the shoreline. Sounds like there could potentially be a big predatory fish around.

Next cast after vocalizing my hunch, this low 40 inch fat stud of a musky hit my CZ Fishing Lures 7 inch jointed glide in the orange shiner pattern.

What kinda freaking monstrosity of a river creature is that?!?!

My buddy Brad Kemnitz missed a fish on a topwater while talking about that fish this giant hit me blind in the figure 8. Felt my rod hold up, looked down, and this green beast was head shaking and wrestling with me.

A gold 7/9 stagger Bucktail from HPM Bucktails tricked this fish.

Magnum Silver Salmon!!!! 🍣 🪙🐟

I’ve caught a few big fish in my day but the salmonoid species has always been unfamiliar territory for me. I’ve wanted a big coho for a few years now. I haven’t really gave it an honest try but it happened last week, at my feet on a square bill at that.

October is finally here and the rain has been coming down across the midwest. Early Autumn is one of my favorite seasons to hunt big fish. Whatever you may be chasing, somewhere, probably far away from people, there are fish absolutely munching and preparing for the cold winter ahead of them.

Get out there folks, go fish, good luck to ya, and I hope ya catch a biggy this weekend!

They claim the salmon that run into the tributaries of the Great Lakes don’t actually eat. Lemme tell you folks this one ate the shat out of my number 10 fire tiger husky jerk then proceeded to rip me around the creek.
