📣SCAM OF THE WEEK📣

📦Handle with Care, This Package is a Scam📦
________________________________________

In this week’s scam, you receive an unexpected package that has no return address. It contains a low-cost item, along with a QR code that you can scan with your phone’s camera. You may be tempted to scan the code to see if you can find additional information about the package, since you don’t know who sent it.
However, this unexpected gift is actually from cybercriminals. In this “brushing” scam, the package is just a trick to make you curious enough to scan the QR code. If you scan the code, you’ll be taken to a fake webpage and prompted to enter your personal data to view more information about the package. But instead of learning more, you’ll be giving your information to cybercriminals!
Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to a brushing scam:
• Never scan a QR code in an unexpected package, even if you’re curious about who sent the item. Treat an unknown QR code like a suspicious link in an email.
• Receiving unordered merchandise could be a sign that your address or login details were exposed in a data breach. Change your account passwords immediately to prevent scammers from accessing your sensitive information.
• Verify your recent purchase history by logging in to your online shopping accounts directly. If you can’t verify the source of a suspicious package, discard it.

📣SCAM OF THE WEEK📣

📑TAX TIME IS HERE! 📑

It’s a Tax Trap!
________________________________________
In this week’s scam, you receive an unexpected phone call from someone who says they are an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent. They claim that you owe money to the IRS. The call seems real because the “agent” even provides what sounds like an actual government badge number. To make this situation even more alarming, they threaten you with fines or threaten to arrest you if you don't immediately pay the money that you owe.
However, this “tax agent” is actually a cybercriminal, and the debt that you supposedly owe isn’t real! They will try to pressure you into paying them, usually by wire transfer or a prepaid debit card. But if you send any money, it goes straight into the cybercriminal’s pockets!
________________________________________
Follow these tips to protect against tax scams:
• The IRS will not call you and threaten to arrest you. If there is an issue with your taxes, they will usually contact you by mail.
• If you do owe money to the IRS, they will never demand immediate payment using prepaid debit cards or wire transfers. Scammers often request payment using these methods because they are more difficult to trace.
• Remember, cybercriminals try to scare you because you’re more likely to act impulsively if you’re afraid. Always stop and think!

📣SCAM OF THE WEEK📣

📦🤔You Should Rethink This Refund🤔📦
________________________________________
In this week’s scam, you receive a text message that appears to be from Amazon. The message claims that an item you bought was of poor quality or has been recalled. It also states that Amazon will provide you with a full refund and a free replacement of the item and provides a link for you to select to view additional details.
However, this is a smishing (text phishing) scam! The link in the text message doesn’t direct you to the actual Amazon website. Instead, it takes you to a fake page that looks like a real Amazon login page. If you try to log in with your Amazon account credentials, cybercriminals will steal them immediately!
________________________________________
Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to this smishing scam:
• You should never select any links in an unexpected text message. If you do receive a suspicious text message, be sure to report it!
• If you believe there’s an issue with one of your Amazon purchases, open the official Amazon app on your phone or navigate to the official website and contact their customer support.
• Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it usually is! In this case, scammers are trying to trick you into selecting a malicious link by offering you a “free” refund.
