If you're looking to get started on your credit journey, the first step I recommend is signing up for credit monitoring services (this is how I immediately can tell if those who inquire about my services are serious about fixing their credit).

Most individuals who contact me have no idea what their credit scores are, let alone what's actually reporting on their credit profile. Whether you plan on joining a credit repair program or fix your own credit, it's always important to keep track of your credit.

If you really wish to obtain GOOD credit, the best thing you can do is learn about consumer laws. We have been misinformed about a lot when it comes to credit and it’s not a coincidence.

The only way you’ll remain stuck is if you don’t do your due diligence and educate yourself because the information is out there, it’s up to you to do your research and APPLY what works best for your situation.

If you are in the process of having your credit repaired (whether you are doing it yourself or you are working with a company), keep in mind that you must do the following in order for the process to actually work:

1. Continue paying your bills ON TIME
2. Do NOT max out your credit cards
3. Not applying for too much credit
4. Do not close out any of your open accounts
5. Make sure you are paying back the balance you've spent (at least pay down to 10% of that account credit limit)
6. If you are working with a company, communicate with your credit consultant if you receive any new information regarding your credit to prevent any delays or setbacks
7. Do NOT pay on any collection accounts while you are actively challenging items unless you were recommended to do so by your consultant
8. Educate yourself as much as possible during the credit process

One of the many reasons why individuals fall victim to bad credit is due to the lack of knowledge pertaining to credit. Fixing your credit is ok, but you must also learn what it takes to maintain good credit.
