If you are currently receiving a subsidy for you Marketplace insurance plan, did you know that you do NOT have to apply the full amount of the subsidy that you are eligible for to your monthly insurance premium?

That's right! If you are eligible for a subsidy on the Marketplace, you can elect to have some or all of that amount applied to your premium each month to reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Most people do not wait to use the tax credit, but you do have the ability to claim the subsidy when you file your taxes instead of over the course of the year. This means that you would be responsible for the FULL price of your health insurance throughout the year and then you would receive the subsidy amount per month that you had the plan, upon receiving your tax return.

Essentially, you can select to receive the subsidy amount now, and it will reduce your monthly premiums by the stated amount, or you can choose to receive the subsidy amount all at once when you file your taxes that year.

A Marketplace Cost Sharing Reduction (CSR) is a type of financial assistance available through the Health Insurance Marketplace. It helps lower the amount you pay out of pocket for health care services, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. CSR's are in addition to any subsidy you are receiving as well.

CSR's are only available to people who enroll in a Silver-level Marketplace plan. If you qualify, your plan will automatically have lower out-of-pocket costs, making it more affordable to get care when you need it.
