The retirement transition anxiety nobody talks about.
Most conversations about retirement focus on the money. Do you have enough? What is your number?
But the harder question is often: what comes next?
After decades of identity tied to work, the shift to not working can be disorienting. Purpose, structure, community. These things do not automatically appear when the paychecks stop.
The best time to think about this is not the week before you retire. It is years before, while you still have time to build the life you want to retire into.

When does work become optional?

Most high earners in their 40s cannot answer this question. They have a vague sense that things are going well, but no clear picture of what enough looks like.

Here is how I help clients find the number.
Start with spending. What does your life actually cost? Not what you think it costs. What it actually costs.

Then project forward. What will it cost in 10 years? 20 years? What adjustments do you want to make?

Then compare to what you have. What is the gap? How fast are you closing it?

Knowing your number changes everything. It turns abstract anxiety into concrete progress.
