INSURABLE INTEREST:
The way insurance carriers see it, one must have something to lose in order to have something to gain. In terms of auto insurance, this means that if someone doesn’t own their vehicle, they can’t recoup from the losses in the form of a payout from an accident claim. The way ownership is verified is by the name(s) on a title. Basically, if the name isn’t on the title, ownership isn’t established. It’s not required to obtain an insurance policy. The reason why this is important is because people will try to hide bad driving records & or newly issued licenses (things that will cause the rate to go up) by placing their vehicles on other people’s insurance. And while the insurance can be written & they can receive their paperwork & documents, if the named insured’s name is not on the title of the particular vehicle, the insurance carrier has the grounds to deny the claim in the event of an accident because the hypothetical owner of the insurance policy didn’t have insurable interest on the vehicle. Sometimes they will still approve it, but spending $ to take a chance on a potential “sometime” isn’t the best of ideas in times of need☂️
