Every June 14th, we celebrate the Stars and Stripes on Flag Day. While we’re all familiar with the United States’ flag, we might not know all of the history behind this symbol.

To celebrate, we wanted to share a few fun facts about the history of the flag that might surprise you:

🔹 The current 50-star design was created by a 17-year-old. Robert G. Heft of Lancaster, Ohio, submitted the design as a high school project in 1958. It was chosen by President Eisenhower out of more than 3,000 submissions in 1960.

🔹 There have been 27 official versions of the flag. Twenty-five of those changes were solely to update the number of stars every time a new state joined the Union. The star additions were admitted on July 4th, and, together, they give us a rich visual history of the country's growth over time.

🔹 The colors for the flag have taken on their own meanings over the years. Charles Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress in 1774, suggested that red represents hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

🔹 Six American flags have been planted on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin were the first, but five additional Apollo missions have also left a flag on the lunar surface.

🔹 The current design is the longest-running version in history. No new states have been added since Hawaii joined the union in 1959, making this the most enduring flag design the country has ever had.

Wishing you a wonderful Flag Day filled with pride and appreciation for the history behind the flag we share.

June is a wonderful time to celebrate the kind of community spirit that reminds us how much good exists in the world. This month, we are sharing a story that proves kindness has no age limit and that one act of generosity can change everything.

At Louisa County High School in Virginia, a group of teenage automotive students spend their semesters doing something truly remarkable. Instead of simply learning how to repair cars in an insulated classroom, they restore donated vehicles and give them away to single parents in need of reliable transportation. In partnership with the nonprofit Giving Words, the program has given away over 60 cars and repaired more than 260, one garage door reveal at a time.

For recipients like Jessica Rader, a single mom of three, the gift was far more than a set of wheels. It opened the door to full-time work, independence, and peace of mind. These students’ actions are a wonderful reminder of the lasting impacts that acts of kindness can have on our communities.

May is a month of meaningful celebrations, with holidays like Mother’s Day to milestones like graduations, reminding us how quickly the years pass and how the connections we make can shape our lives in unexpected ways. This month, we’re sharing a story that perfectly captures just how small and serendipitous the world can be.

When Megan Lewis was in second grade, she was paired with a high school junior named Suzanne Koziol for a school pen pal assignment. They exchanged letters about favorite foods, hobbies, and future dreams, but, like many childhood projects, the letters were eventually tucked away and forgotten.

Three decades later, Lewis rediscovered those letters in a box of old mementos and looked up her former pen pal, only to realize Koziol was now Dr. Suzanne Koziol Pugh, the physician who delivered her two children. Neither of them knew their connection stretched back to a classroom assignment in the 1990s. As Pugh shared, “It really made us feel like I was meant to take care of her and we were meant to play a role in each other’s lives.”

Happy Earth Day! In celebration, we invite you to join us in making one simple eco-friendly choice — whether it is using a reusable water bottle, choosing to walk or carpool instead of driving alone, or saying no to single-use plastics.

Small actions can add up to a big impact. Let's make a difference together!

April is a month of transformation, reminding us that hard work can often grow into something beautiful. This month, we’re spotlighting one couple’s decades-long journey to restore and transform a piece of history, brick by brick.

In North Yorkshire, Mark and Carol Benson spent 30 years lovingly restoring a forgotten train station. What was once a derelict depot is now “The Old Station” — a one-of-a-kind destination where visitors can stay overnight in converted first-class train cars or a cozy cottage that was once a ticket office. They even salvaged original bricks from old buildings on the site to preserve its history.

Their story is proof that passion, patience, and a whole lot of dedication can bring even the most abandoned places back to life. Here’s to the dreamers and doers who remind us that with enough heart, anything can be transformed into something truly extraordinary.
