Its sooooo HOT 🥵! We weren’t ready for this heat but it’s super important to remember some key Heat Safety Tips!

1. Stay Hydrated đź’§
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

2. Limit Time in the Heat ⏲️
Try to schedule outdoor activities during the cooler morning or evening hours. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

3. Dress for the Weather 👚 👒
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to help keep your body cool.

4. Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles đźš—
Temperatures inside a parked car can rise to deadly levels within minutes—even with the windows cracked.

5. Know the Signs of Heat Illness 🤒 🥵
Watch for dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, muscle cramps, confusion, or fainting. Move to a cool place, hydrate, and seek medical help if symptoms worsen.

It has been 82 years since the Allied Troops executed the D-Day Invasion. In operation was not without sacrifice. Remember and Honor.

Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy in 1944 to execute the D-Day invasion which changed the course of World War II. The successful operation was not without incredible sacrifice. 4,414 allied troops gave their lives in support of the effort. We honor all those who gave some, and those who sacrificed all in support of our Nation's defense.

It’s always a wonderful occasion when Steve shares dinner and awards with a group of exceptional athletes who are set to graduate this year. Our office has partnered with Real People Educating Others (RPEO), a nonprofit organization led by PJ Piggott and Reneldo Randall, since our first full year in 2017, focusing on initiatives such as book bag drives for local schools. In 2025, in honor of the renowned track and football coach Mel Jones, RPEO and Steve joined forces to establish a scholarship in his memory.

To provide some context, Coach Mel Jones dedicated an impressive 46 years to teaching and coaching at Lafayette High School. During his tenure, he achieved an astounding record in track and field, leading the Lafayette Rams to an impressive 47 district championships, 20 regional championships, and five state championships. His peers recognized his excellence with multiple Coach of the Year awards, including six selections by the Peninsula District Coaches Association for boys and girls indoor/outdoor track. He also received accolades from the Peninsula Sports Club in 1985, the Virginia High School Coaches Association in 2004, and the Bay Rivers District in 2009.

Following his retirement, Coach Jones continued to make an impact by coaching Running Backs at Virginia Union and later at Hampton University. Among the notable athletes he mentored are Ron Springs (NFL – Dallas Cowboys), Lawrence Taylor (NFL – New York Giants), Mel Gray (NFL – Houston/Tennessee Oilers and Detroit Lions), Seneca Lassiter (Nike Track and Field), Chris Luzar (NFL - Jacksonville Jaguars), and Terrance Martin (NFL – Houston Texans). In 1995, he was honored as a finalist for the NFL High School Coach of the Year.

This year, we received a number of applications for the scholarship, and an independent selection committee awarded four deserving student-athletes scholarships of up to $3,000 each. The selection criteria included academic achievement, leadership qualities, community involvement, and athletic excellence.

Enjoy the long weekend. Enjoy the unofficial start to summer. Do not forget what this weekend is actually about.

Remember and Honor those who laid down there lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day.

With Memorial Day approaching, we are reminded that each fold of a flag holds meaning. The final fold however, the one right before the flag is cradled and handed to a grieving family, says what words cannot.

We pause in silence for the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We honor their memory, their families, and the weight of every fold that tells their story.

We will never forget.
