"La Borinqueña" was written in 1868, the same year as El Grito de Lares. A melody born in the same breath as our first cry for freedom. Félix Astol Artés composed the original danza, and Lola Rodríguez de Tió, our poet warrior, gave it the revolutionary lyrics that made it a hymn of resistance. She didn't write a lullaby. She wrote a battle cry.

Most people have never heard her name. But she was the first. 🇵🇷

In the early 1800s, María de las Mercedes Barbudo became the first Puerto Rican woman known to be imprisoned and exiled by the Spanish colonial government for organizing in favor of independence. She didn't have an army. She had conviction, courage, and the unshakeable belief that Puerto Rico deserved to be free.

They sent her away from the island she loved. They erased her from the history books. But she was there, at the very beginning, when the dream of a free Puerto Rico was still dangerous enough to get you exiled for speaking it out loud. That's what it means to be Boricua. 💪🏽

If you grew up in a Puerto Rican neighborhood, you already know the sound. 🛎️

The little bell of the piragua cart meant summer was officially here. It meant running outside with whatever change you could find, picking your flavor (tamarindo, always tamarindo), and standing on that sidewalk like nothing else in the world mattered.

That cart wasn't just selling shaved ice. It was selling belonging. It was selling home. 🇵🇷
