In 1998 I went to New Mexico with some friends. While there, I decided to go mountain climbing. My friends, who were all related to each other, couldn't go up the mountain with me because bad knees ran in their family. So, I was by myself.
Anyway, I reached a point on the mountain where there was a flat shelf. There, a person could just walk around and view the wide-open plains for miles. It was absolutely beautiful! I was so awe-struck by the beauty, that I began to walk backwards, taking in the views. And in an instant, out of nowhere, a hummingbird appeared. It stayed right in my face, literally just inches away. I could feel the flutter of its wings on my face as it hovered in front of me. I was so amazed that a hummingbird was THAT close to me, that I stopped mid-stride, so I wouldn't frighten it away.
So, I'm standing there on one foot, holding the other one about a foot above the ground...just staring at this hummingbird, almost holding my breath. Then it began to move around, still hovering within inches of me.
First, it moved a few inches to the right, then back to the center, in front of my face, keeping my attention the whole time. I'm still standing on one foot, mind you. Then, it swooped down to the right, right next to the foot I was holding up.
When I followed the hummingbird with my eyes, I was almost in shock when I saw what was under the foot I was holding up...A RATTLESNAKE! Yes, a real LIVE rattlesnake! It was coiled up waiting, and ready to strike. If I had taken just ONE more step....God sent that hummingbird to save my life.
