Your insurance premium is increasing. What can you ask your insurer?

Starting January 1, 2027, Connecticut law will require certain personal risk insurance renewal notices to include information about how consumers can request an explanation for a premium increase.

For homeowners, tenants, private passenger non-fleet automobile, and mobile manufactured home insurance, consumers can request an explanation by mail, telephone, or email. Insurers must provide a reasonable explanation within 20 business days of receiving the request.

The explanation must provide understandable information that helps the policyholder determine the basic nature of the premium increase.

These requirements are established by Public Act 26-69 and addressed in CID Bulletin PC-94-26. See Conn. Gen. Stat. §§ 38a-323 and 38a-663 for the relevant statutory framework.
