Q: What do I do when an insured reports a hit-and-run accident?
A: A "hit-and-run" accident potentially provides coverage under uninsured motorist coverage (if applicable). In order for coverage to apply, there is a requirement under the Insurance Code that the insured (or someone on his behalf) reports the accident within 24 hours to the police department, sheriff or highway patrol, depending upon the proper jurisdiction. Therefore, if an insured reports that he was involved in a hit-and-run accident, it is important to ask the insured if he or she has reported the matter to the police. You should also ask if anyone else has reported the matter to the police on the insured's behalf. If no police report has been made, the insured should be warned about the policy requirement and advised to report the accident to the proper jurisdiction within 24 hours of the time of loss in order to secure coverage.
