Jaylen Brown used his latest livestream to speak about what he believes happens behind the scenes when influential NBA players try to invest in the communities they came from.

“I announced that I wanted to build like Black Wall Street, and I told you I was going to commit and invest into the city, and that’s what we did. But I want other athletes to see that because the people that are around some of our most instrumental players are steering them away from being in their community, because there’s no benefit for these people that are representing.”

He said going against that structure can come with consequences, pointing to the labels and media narratives that have followed him.

“It takes a real strong mind and some real courage to even go against it, because then they label me. They said I had a disease. They call me the smartest person in the room and all this type of stuff for just trying to uplift my community and showing respect to the places that I came from.”

Jaylen specifically referenced Colin Cowherd and the anonymous source behind the “disease” comment, questioning how his focus on positively impacting his community became part of a negative narrative around him.

“That’s all I’ve talked about since I was 18 years old. Is my community, where I come from, and how can I positively impact?”

His criticism then widened to the corporations and media companies he believes help shape those narratives.

“They be putting propaganda out, putting out false statements, stuff that’s not even true. That’s why I started streaming in the first place, because these industries be so corrupt.”

The larger point, he said, is that athletes should be able to use their influence for something beyond financial gain.

“They do not care about your community. They care about dollars. Everybody only cares about dollars.”
