The 5 Questions Every Retirement Plan Must Answer — Before It’s Too Late
Manuel E. Collazo, Founder of BevMan Group

A strong retirement plan isn’t built on products or predictions—it’s built on answering the right questions. This article outlines the five questions every retirement plan must address to create clarity, reduce risk, and support confident long-term decision-making.

Most people assume retirement planning begins with choosing the right product. In reality, it begins by asking the right questions. A durable retirement plan isn’t built on market predictions or hopeful assumptions—it’s built on clarity. Clarity around income, time, risk, taxes, and contingencies. Without that foundation, even well-intended plans can quietly drift off course, often without warning and with limited opportunity to correct later.

The first question every plan must answer is straightforward, yet powerful: How much reliable income will I need, and where will it come from? From there, the planning lens widens. How long does my money need to last? What risks could disrupt this plan—market volatility, longevity, healthcare costs, or taxes? How efficient is my income strategy after taxes? And finally, what happens if life doesn’t go according to plan? Retirement planning isn’t about eliminating uncertainty; it’s about preparing intelligently for it.

At Bevman Group, we believe real planning starts long before products are discussed. Our education-first approach is designed to help families and professionals answer these five questions with clarity and confidence. When each question has a thoughtful, coordinated answer, decisions become simpler, stress is reduced, and retirement shifts from a source of anxiety to a phase of life designed with purpose and control. Because a retirement plan isn’t defined by what you own—it’s defined by how well it works, no matter what the future brings.

Call to Action

If your retirement plan doesn’t clearly answer these five questions, it may be time for a second look. At Bevman Group, we help clients move from assumptions to clarity—so their plans are built to adapt, endure, and perform through every stage of life.

**The greatest threat to your retirement is not market volatility—it is the decisions that do not feel risky when you make them. In retirement planning, the outcomes that matter most are often shaped by choices that appear completely reasonable—until it is too late to adjust them. **

Retirement is widely perceived as a reward for discipline—a point where risk is reduced and stability takes over. For many, it represents the moment when years of effort finally convert into security. The numbers align, the projections validate the plan, and the decision to step away from work feels both logical and well-earned. That assumption deserves closer scrutiny. Retirement is not the point at which risk disappears. It is the point at which risk becomes concentrated into a single decision—one that is difficult to reverse once it has been made.

If you are within five years of retirement, the decision is already in motion. The transition from accumulation to distribution introduces a shift that is rarely fully appreciated at the time it occurs. Income is no longer supported by new contributions. It is sustained by assets that must now perform under less forgiving conditions. Flexibility declines. Early outcomes carry lasting consequences. A period of market weakness at the outset—combined with withdrawals—can permanently alter the trajectory of a portfolio. The challenge is not that the decision is careless. In most cases, it is well-reasoned. The issue is that the long-term impact of that decision is not fully visible when it is made, and once the transition occurs, the ability to adjust becomes increasingly limited.

This is where disciplined planning must go beyond projections. At the Bevman Group, retirement is treated as a controlled transition rather than a single event. The objective is not simply to reach a number, but to ensure that the structure supporting that number can withstand real-world conditions. Understanding how income, risk, and timing interact from the very first year is essential. Through the Retirement Stress Test™, clients gain clarity on how their strategy may respond to market cycles, inflation, and longevity. Strong planning does not eliminate risk. It identifies where risk is most likely to emerge—especially when it is not immediately apparent—and builds a framework capable of absorbing it.
The most consequential risks in retirement are rarely the ones investors are watching. They are embedded in the decisions that never felt like risks in the first place.

If you are approaching retirement, the question is no longer whether you are ready. The question is whether your decision can withstand what comes next.

Your Financial Advisor Might Be the Biggest Risk to Your Retirement
Manuel E. Collazo, Founder of BevMan Group.

Most people believe they have a retirement strategy. In reality, they have a collection of recommendations that have never been tested together

Most financial advice was never designed to function as a complete system. Many retirees believe they are protected simply because they have an advisor. Having an advisor and having a strategy are not the same thing. Most advice works in isolation, while retirement does not. That is where the disconnect begins. In practice, guidance is often fragmented, product driven, or reactive rather than strategic. Some advisors focus on selling, while others focus on managing assets, yet very few are accountable for how a retirement plan performs over time. That gap between advice and accountability is where risk quietly builds, and where confidence can quietly become misplaced.

What we see consistently as a result are portfolios that appear well constructed but lack income strategy, tax efficiency, and coordination across accounts. On paper, everything looks sound. In reality, very little has been tested under pressure. Clients are told they are diversified, yet no one has clearly explained what happens when withdrawals begin, markets decline, or healthcare costs rise. A portfolio can be diversified and still be unprepared. The issue is not incompetence, it is structure. When those decisions are not coordinated within a unified plan, even well intentioned guidance can produce outcomes that were never intended.

This is not about distrust, it is about awareness. The strongest financial relationships are built on transparency, alignment, and a clearly defined strategy that connects every decision being made. Retirement is not just about growing assets, it is about converting those assets into sustainable and efficient income under real world conditions. If those pieces are not designed to work together, they will not work when it matters most. And when that moment arrives, outcomes are no longer driven by strategy, they are defined by whatever happens next.

The 2026 COLA is rising, but retirement costs are rising faster — and smart planning is now essential

Retirees head into 2026 with an uncomfortable truth: a 2.8% Social Security COLA that feels less like progress and more like pressure. Medicare premiums, deductibles, and marketplace health-insurance costs are rising faster than the adjustment meant to soften them, turning a national “raise” into a personal squeeze. Add in cooling wage growth, higher consumer credit usage, and a holiday season powered by borrowing rather than savings, and it becomes clear that retirement stability in this environment isn’t about reacting — it’s about planning ahead with intention.

Globally, that planning challenge only intensifies. The Federal Reserve is signaling patience on rate cuts while the ECB and Bank of England navigate their own inflation battles, creating an uneven interest-rate landscape that shapes bond yields, annuity payouts, and long-term income assumptions. At the same time, geopolitical tensions — from stalled Ukraine diplomacy to persistent maritime risks across the Middle East — continue to disrupt energy markets. Oil volatility feeds into inflation expectations, and inflation expectations feed directly into how far a retiree’s income can truly stretch. Markets move, but retirement math moves with them.

Across Latin America, macro pressures add a final layer of complexity. Mexico’s peso has been swinging on mixed fiscal signals, Brazil faces widening budget strain, and Argentina’s policy resets are generating fresh volatility — conditions that ripple into U.S. credit markets, corporate earnings, and inflation-sensitive assets. For retirees and pre-retirees, the message is unmistakable: retirement planning must evolve with the world around it. The strongest strategies today combine predictable income with flexible assets, incorporate health-care inflation directly into projections, and anticipate global disruptions long before they show up in monthly expenses.

When a cost-of-living adjustment no longer reflects the true cost of living, strength comes from strategy — not surprises. The retirees who thrive in this environment are the ones who build structures that adapt: resilient income streams, health-care planning that absorbs shocks, inflation defense, and a retirement roadmap designed for a world that changes faster than any COLA can.

If you're ready to elevate your plan — from Medicare and Marketplace decisions to Social Security timing, annuity and income design, and long-term care preparation — Bevman Group is ready to guide you with clarity, confidence, and care.
