If you are struggling financially here are 3 options to look into for your health coverage.

1. Medicaid- free coverage
Eligibility is based on your income, household size, state, and age.

This option is only available for individuals and families below 138% state poverty level.

A general rule of thumb is if you make 12k-15k/yearly you probably qualify for Medicaid.

2. ACA/Marketplace

Because of Open Enrollment (Nov 1 - Jan 15), this choice is unavailable to most people, but if you have a qualifying life event, you may be eligible for special enrollment.

3. Employer plans
Your best bet is to find a company that hooks you up with employee benefits. Usually, employers offer great coverage and in most cases, employer plans can be affordable since your employer is covering at least half of your premium.

One thing I often hear from self-employed individuals or small biz owners is that it's tough to figure out how much they'll make in a year.

This is a problem because ACA/Obamacare plans are based on your yearly income. If you don't know, it's difficult to calculate subsidies.

If you misrepresent your income on your initial application you will have to pay back your subsidy amount at the end of the year when you file your taxes.

2 years ago, I owed $1,800 in premiums at the end of the year because I made more than what was listed on the application

So what should you do if you don't know your income?
If you are healthy with no pre-existing conditions look into shopping for Private insurance through major insurers like UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Farm Bureau, etc.

Private insurance premiums are NOT based on income. This is great for self-employed people because if your income fluctuates throughout the year your premium will always remain the same.

#1 to keep in mind when shopping for Private health insurance is that 99% of private plans will exclude pre-existing conditions for 6-12 months. If you are looking into making the switch to private insurance keep this in mind.
