Buying your first home is exciting… but please don’t do it blindly

Especially in NJ & NY, buying a house can completely change your tax situation. Between mortgage interest, property taxes, and state taxes, tax planning matters MORE than people realize.

Before signing anything, make sure you have:🏡 a good realtor💰 a good accountant🔨 and a trustworthy contractor

Trust me… you’ll need all three 😂

Even if you aren’t planning to sell your business for another 20 years… save this post.

Recently, I had the opportunity to review the financials of a few landscaping businesses that are currently on the market.

And despite being completely different businesses, they all had ONE thing in common:

Their finances were organized, clean, and ready before buyers even asked for them.

That preparation matters more than most business owners realize.

Because when buyers (or their accountants) start reviewing a business, they want to clearly see things like:

→ Several years of tax returns
→ Up-to-date bookkeeping + financial statements
→ Revenue breakdowns by service or client
→ Payroll and contractor records
→ Major assets, loans, or equipment documentation
→ Sales tax filings (if applicable)
→ Client/vendor agreements

I’ve also seen businesses with strong revenue struggle during the process simply because they couldn’t properly show or support their numbers.

And when that happens, buyers become hesitant… or the offer comes in lower than expected.

The truth is: preparing your financials isn’t just for tax season it’s part of building a business that has long-term value.

You may not be planning to sell this year, but if selling is part of your future goals someday, the preparation starts now.

April 15 is NOT the deadline.

That’s just when the panic starts. 👀
The IRS is open all year… but too many contractors file an extension and disappear until October.

If you’re in construction, here’s what to do NOW:
→ Track down missing 1099s, receipts, and job expenses
→ Make sure you paid what you owe (extensions don’t extend payments)
→ Get your books cleaned up so your numbers actually make sense
Because waiting until October with messy books? That’s where problems start.
If you don’t have a plan to finish your return, you already know where to find me.

Not ready to file your personal return (aka Form 1040) just yet?

The deadline (for most taxpayers) to file your extension this year is April 15th! 📆

But before you extend and call it a day, make sure you know this: if you owe any taxes, they’re still *due* on April 15th.

But Ana, how do I know how much to pay in taxes if I haven’t filed my return?

Really good question! Swipe for my tips on how to get a decent estimate of your extension payment. ➡️

A quick reality check for my construction business owners 👷🏽‍♂️🛠️
That “contractor” you hired… might actually be an employee

Ask yourself:
→ Do they work only for you?
→ Do you control their schedule + how the job gets done?
→ Are you providing the tools/equipment?

If you’re saying yes… 🚩 you might be misclassifying them.
And trust me, the Department of Labor is paying attention to this.
This isn’t just paperwork… this can turn into penalties, back taxes, and headaches you don’t need.
If you’re building your business, let’s make sure you’re building it the right way from the start.

April is the BIG ONE when it comes to taxes...

You’ve gotta decide whether you’re ready to file or extend, pay any 2025 taxes you owe (or risk underpayment penalties), and make your first quarter estimated tax payment for 2026.

And oh yeah, depending on your state, you might need to do that all for your state taxes, too.

But it’s also the start of Q2, which means your business can have a totally fresh start! 🌸

My favorite way to refresh and feel more in control of my business?

Pick one little business task that you don’t love doing and find a way to automate (or outsource) it. 🖥️

You don’t need to have perfectly clean books to work with me...

Like, that’s kind of the whole point
