Open Enrollment 101: key dates and options for 2027

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7. During AEP, people with Medicare can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, or move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Changes start January 1. Medicare.gov suggests reviewing the changes to decide whether the plan will still meet a member's needs next year.

Some plans are not renewing for 2027. Moneywise reports that about 990,000 people nationwide could lose their current Medicare Advantage plan for 2027. Here is how that works, according to Medicare.gov:
• Members get a separate non-renewal letter from the plan.
• A member who does not choose a new plan returns to Original Medicare when the plan ends.
• A Special Enrollment Period runs December 8 through the end of February for members whose plan is not renewing.
• Members returning to Original Medicare may have a special right to buy certain Medigap policies, generally within 63 days after the plan coverage ends. The letter is proof of that right, so it is worth keeping.

Open Enrollment is here: what to check in an ANOC letter

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is open now, from October 15 through December 7. A helpful first step is the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans send this letter each fall so members get it by September 30. It lists what changes in the plan on January 1.

What to check in the letter:
• Premium and deductible
• Drug list (formulary): each prescription, its tier, and any new prior authorization
• Doctors, hospitals and pharmacies: still in network for 2027?
• Copays for the visits and services used most
• Extra benefits like dental, vision and hearing

If the letter never arrived, the plan can send a copy.

Open Enrollment: what happens in a complimentary plan review

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7. A plan review is one way to understand 2027 changes. A licensed insurance agent can:

• Check prescriptions against the drug list
• Check doctors, hospitals and pharmacies against the network
• Explain the options available during AEP

Helpful to have handy: Medicare card, current plan cards, a list of prescriptions, and the ANOC letter.
