COUNTY ALERT

Today, I contacted the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management to notify them that I am declaring a State of Emergency for all of Crittenden County. This declaration is effective immediately and will remain in effect until the storm has passed and conditions have improved.

As this winter storm approaches, conditions are expected to rapidly deteriorate on all city streets, county and state roads, and bridges throughout the county. Snow and sleet accumulations could reach 5 inches or more, depending on location. Icing is also possible and may result in widespread power outages. High winds and extremely low temperatures are expected as the storm moves into our area.

Declaring a State of Emergency allows the county to receive assistance from the State if needed.

Please take time now to prepare before the storm begins later this evening. If you must travel, be mindful of road crews and give them ample space as they work to clear main routes across the county. I ask you to continue monitoring the weather through local tv stations or apps you may have on your electronic devices.

Please keep our healthcare workers, law enforcement officers, utility workers, first responders, and road crews in your prayers as they work to keep our community safe.

If you do not have to be out, please stay home.

BEFORE YOU READ ANY FURTHER KNOW THIS: THE DATA ON THIS WILL CHANGE EVERY DAY HEADING INTO SATURDAY. CHECK DAILY WITH WHATEVER TRUSTED SOURCE YOU FOLLOW.

Now. That being said.

I told y’all (who are faithful readers) a while back “let’s watch Saturday”.

Here’s the deal - these numbers are currently astonishing … and changing.

Here’s what we know:

*Whatever happens looks to begin (using Memphis as a marker) around 3-6 am Saturday morning and continue throughout the day.

*Its going to be cold (and by that I mean “cold enough for snow”. None of this waffling around the freezing point madness we normally deal with)

Here’s what’s highly likely:

*A pretty significant moisture (think rain) event is going to pass by. Critical component for snow.

Here’s what can change:

*The “location” of the moisture. So far, the thickest part of this moisture stream has continuously laid itself right across Memphis (more or less). If THAT holds up? We’re going to see a HUGE amount of snow Saturday.

*But think of it like this: we’re waiting on someone to lay a garden hose full of water across the region. But that garden hose wiggles once the water is turned on. So today, it looks like it’s right over us. But we’re still 4+ days out and it will adjust a bit each day.

So I could tell you today “WOOHOO WE’RE GETTING 10+ INCHES OF SNOW!” and then the garden hose adjusts and you see 1” and you’re mad*.

(Editors note: I’ve spent a lifetime having people be mad at me for something someone else said or they misread or misremembered. So I try to be as clear as possible. That usually means reading, which today’s kids don’t like to do. Sorry. Can’t meme this.)

Conclusion:

As of right now? It looks like an impressive snow event is shaping up for Saturday. IF that occurs, it will most likely impact school/work Monday.

SO I’LL FINISH LIKE I STARTED -

Make sure to check back with whoever your trusted source is daily (stop going by that dumb built in weather app on your phone. It’s right twice a day like a broken clock.)

((And of course I care enough to update yall here when I can. I DO have a thriving full-time job, you know.))
