After a stretch of unseasonably warm weather, a significant cold front is forecast to move through Utah this week, bringing freezing temperatures in the valleys & heavy snow at higher elevations. If the recent warmth encouraged you to start your spring planting early, it is time to take immediate action to protect your investment.
How to Prepare Your Garden:
Cover Your Plants: Use frost cloths, old bedsheets, or burlap to create a protective tent over vulnerable plants. Avoid using plastic directly against foliage, as it can trap moisture and cause freeze damage. Ensure covers are weighted down to withstand expected high winds.
Water Thoroughly: Moist soil acts as an insulator, holding more heat than dry soil. Water your plants at midday to help the roots stay warmer through the night.
Move Containers: Bring any potted plants or hanging baskets into a garage, shed, or sheltered area to keep them above freezing.
Protect Individual Starts: For small seedlings, you can use inverted buckets, milk jugs with the bottoms cut out, or specialized cloches to trap ground heat.
Use Mulch: Adding a thick layer of wood chips or straw around the base of newly planted shrubs and perennials can provide extra root insulation.
