Staff at the East Arkansas Regional Unit (EARU) set up a memorial table honoring the memory of their late colleague and friend Sgt. Travis Wallace. Sgt. Wallace, who also served as a police officer for the city of Helena-West Helena, was killed last Thursday as he attempted to arrest a subject wanted for a shooting that occurred the previous week. Respected by his coworkers, Sgt. Wallace’s presence is greatly missed by his EARU family.

On November 12th, Police Officer Travis Wallace responded to a tip that a suspect wanted for a prior shooting was at the Delta Inn in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. Travis and another officer arrived at the motel just as the suspects’ SUV was about to exit the parking lot. When Officer Wallace attempted to block the vehicle from entering the highway, the passenger jumped out and gunned him down. Though mortally wounded and fighting for his life, Travis found the strength to engage the gunman in a shootout before he fled the scene. The officer was rushed to the hospital where he passed away an hour later. Both the gunman and his getaway driver were apprehended the following day in Mississippi.

Officer Travis Wallace was a five year veteran of the Helena-West Helena Police Department and leaves behind a young son that he has sole custody of. Travis was remembered for being a born leader. He was an ambitious and professional officer who was always eager to help his community. Officer Wallace was 41-years old.
