I did a quick test of three free tax preparation software services today that were referral partners from the IRS. To access the list of free providers - and see if you meet the qualifications - please visit the IRS website: https://buff.ly/nxn2VHm.

The three programs I tested were FreeTaxUSA, 1040, and OLT. Here is my quick take on each platform.

FreeTaxUSA.com was the best user interface and the easiest to compute the tax liability for myself and my small business. It took me about 45 minutes to upload my three W-2s (from three different states), upload my 1098-E, and upload my 1095-A. FreeTaxUSA gave me the lowest calculated tax liability.

1040.com made me key in all information for my Forms W-2, 1098-E, and 1095-A. Their user interface was pretty good in leading through the entire process - which took about 60 minutes of clock time . 1040.com gave me the second lowest calculated tax liability for my situation.

OLT.com also made me key in all information from my five tax forms. Their user interface was the least user friendly of these three and the workflow was the least intuitive. This platform gave me the least advantageous tax liability calculation.

It should be noted that I do not have any forms 1099 because all my savings are in IRAs and my business. You can probably prepare your own tax return and file electronically with the IRS before the deadline. If you get stuck, please contact me!
