Do you know anyone over 73 who wants to pay less taxes and give more to charity?

Do they know about Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)?

If not, make sure they watch this explanation from Meghan Tait, CFP®

For many clients, we don’t worry about them running out of money. We worry more about them running out of time, health, or opportunities….And deferring things that they could have enjoyed more or made a bigger impact when they had the money, time, health, and opportunity to do so. Here’s a few questions I ask my clients to avoid missing those opportunities:

It’s been another good year in the markets. But good markets can bring a range of emotions. We know some who tend to feel worried when the stock market is at “all time highs”We know others who tend to feel eager to get more aggressive when they see their investments growing. These feelings are common and natural, but they’re not always useful. For those feeling a certain way heading into 2025, we suggest:-Planning ahead to identify the role of each account and the timeframe in which they might need to access the savings/investments.-Pre-establish the appropriate target balance with their investments, establishing and sticking to the guardrails around their portfolio-Emphasizing that success has historically been driven from “time in the market” instead of “trying to time the market”-And leaning on a trusted friend and voice of reason to help maintain perspective and check any subconscious feelings of greed or fear at the doorHow are you feeling after a year like this? What’s your approach going to be?Investment Advice offered through FC Advisory LLC, a registered investment adviser doing business as Financial Coach and doing business as New Wealth Project.Information presented through this communication is for general purposes only and is NOT INTENDED AS A RECOMMENDATION OR OFFER OF ANY ADVICE OR SERVICES. We've seen our retired clients “gift” money in a number of different ways including:

-A "no-strings attached" check to family members during the Holidays
-Annual contributions to grandchildren's 529 college savings plans
-A substantial one-time contribution help with a down payment on a property
-Stepping in to support a loved one facing an unexpected expense or job loss

It can be a great way to transfer wealth from one generation to the next and get to experience the impact of that wealth while you're living.

We've also found that there’s often confusion around the gifting rules such as:

-How much can you give?
-What amount is taxable (to whom)?
-What needs to be reported for tax purposes?

This article from Smart Asset below breaks down what you need to know about monetary gifts:

https://smartasset.com/retirement/gift-tax-limits

Once you’ve had a chance to read it, consider the following:

If you could give a substantial monetary gift to someone you love in 2025:

1. Who would you give to?
2. How much would you give?
3. What would you hope they do with the money?

Whether you primarily handle your household finances or not, it’s important that both you and your spouse stay aware of the following:

1. Where are accounts, loans, policies, documents located?

2. Who are the beneficiaries on each account/policy? (Many people have accidentally listed a parent or ex as the beneficiary and forgot to change it)

3. Who would you call for help in navigating the finances if something happened to your spouse?

It’s not a bad checklist to walk through once in a while.

Maybe next week can be your “once in a while.”
