Green Home Energy

Green Home Energy Save Energy. Save Money. Live Comfortably. This maximization of performance and reduction of energy consumption is attained through three steps:

1.

At Green Home Energy, our primary goal is to maximize the performance of our customers’ homes, while simultaneously making them use less energy. Observation – We will refer one of our BPI (Building Performance Institute) certified energy auditors to do a comprehensive energy audit on your home. This process will pin point exactly where your home could benefit most from energy retrofit improvements

.
2. Analysis & Planning– You will sit down with a Green Home Energy home specialist, review the results of your audit, and formulate a plan that works best for you, your home, and your finances.
3. Implementation - From replacing old incandescent light bulbs with efficient compact fluorescent lights, to replacing your furnace, Green Home Energy is fully capable of implementing any and all energy retrofits to your home. Green Home Energy is also a DTE Energy and Consumers Energy Trade Ally. This makes our clients eligible for up to $3,500 in cash rebates through the Home Performance with Energy Star program! GHE fills out and submits all paperwork for you and you receive a rebate check in the mail!

In lots of new construction homes, builders will vent bath fans out of the soffit. Of all of the termination options for your bath fan this is the worst! Just as in this home, the hot air pumped downward out of the soffit then rises and makes its way back into the attic. This is why you see the localized mold growth in the rafter bays around these two terminations. We will remove these soffit vents, and duct these fans through the roof (a gable end wall works too). This eliminates any chance of the hot humid are reentering the attic space.

The bungalo style of construction is very common in the metro Detroit area. Properly air sealing and insulating these homes can be a challenge due the their multiple “cold storage” or attic spaces. You have a couple different options when determining how you’d like to proceed with your project. This article from Fine Homebuilding Magazine, does an excellent job demonstrating these options.

Older Cape Cod–style homes may be charming, but they are often poorly insulated. Read this article to learn two ways to insulate an Old Cape.

The Michigan Public Services Commission is staffed with good people that just need to hear from you on this. Please take the time, while we still have it, to send them a note stating you side with 90% of Michigan’s residence and support net metering (the right to receive a one for one credit for your extra power you send to the grid).

Nonprofit advocacy groups linked to DTE Energy are waging a public campaign to significantly reduce the amount customers are paid for their solar power, in line with the utility’s request before Michigan regulators.

Ahhh the polar vortex... Our favorite weather phenomenon! Mother nature's very own home energy audit! If your floors are cold, bedroom is drafty, utility bills skyrocketing, and icicles are hanging down off of your gutters... Give us a call!

Leaky homes are energy hogs. Home energy audits can reveal how much.

“It’s quite shocking... It’s just short of a death sentence for residential solar.”

While DTE has commercials showing solar panels and talking about reducing emissions, their legislative agenda looks quite different.

Solar advocates say the first utility proposal to replace net metering in Michigan would unfairly compensate customers for their power while also charging them “punitive” fixed fees.

Hard to tell from these photos, but the roof deck in this attic is soaking wet! A high level of air leakage in the home is allowing the humidified conditioned air to leak in the attic space, freeze on the deck, then thaw once the sun hits the roof... The drip marks in the fiberglass insulation show how the water drips from the roofing nails poking through the deck. Time to air seal this attic deck!

We recently looked at a building for (West Bloomfield Parks) to see what was causing ice damming issues. In addition to a MASSIVE wasp nest, a really poor insulation job has left exposed drywall everywhere in this attic! It always amazes us that energy efficiency is always so quickly overlooked in commercial construction!

We are working today with on an energy efficiency upgrade to their clubhouse! This morning the frost on the roof deck illustrated exactly why they needed to have this done. You don’t need a thermal image camera to see the current heat loss they are experiencing through the attic space!
