October Wheat: What we’re watching ahead of WASDE

Wheat export sales for the 2026/2027 crop year have continued to trail the five-year average, while export inspections remain close to the historical pace.

The September Grain Stocks report showed wheat stocks essentially in line with trade expectations. Meanwhile, the Small Grains 2026 Summary estimated all-wheat production slightly above the September WASDE estimate.

The slower export commitment pace creates the possibility that USDA could reduce its current export forecast, which could lead to a change in ending stocks.

The October WASDE report has historically shown a greater likelihood of triggering a negative reaction in the wheat market and tends to see above-average market volatility. October Soybeans: What we’re watching ahead of WASDE

Soybean export sales commitments for the 2026/2027 crop continue to exceed historical averages. Meanwhile, August soybean crush decreased from July but remained above the level recorded in August of last year.

The September Grain Stocks report showed soybean stocks below both trade expectations and the September WASDE estimate. USDA also lowered estimated 2025 soybean production slightly, which should reduce 2026/2027 beginning stocks.

Strong early export sales and firm crush demand, combined with lower-than-expected beginning stocks, could result in a modest decline in soybean ending stocks in the October WASDE report.

The October WASDE report has historically shown a greater likelihood of triggering a positive reaction in the soybean market and tends to see above-average market volatility. October Corn: What we’re watching ahead of WASDE

The USDA’s reported pace of corn exports has slowed, with 2026/2027 export commitments below the five-year average. Meanwhile, the September Grain Stocks report showed corn stocks above both trade expectations and the September WASDE estimate.

USDA also lowered its estimated 2025 corn production, which is expected to increase 2026/2027 beginning stocks. A lower new-crop corn yield estimate could offset at least a portion of the increase in beginning stocks.

The October WASDE report has historically shown a greater likelihood of triggering a negative reaction in the corn market and tends to see above-average market volatility. September Wheat: What we’re watching ahead of WASDE

Wheat export sales reported pace for the 2025/2026 crop year have remained slightly behind the five-year average, while export inspections remain firm and ahead of the five-year average.

Grain Market Insider expects overall U.S. wheat production to remain close to unchanged. The slower pace of export sales creates the possibility USDA could eventually reduce its export forecast if demand does not improve.

The September WASDE report has historically shown a greater likelihood of triggering a negative reaction in the wheat market. September Soybeans: What we’re watching ahead of WASDE

Soybean old-crop export inspections have remained steady and are ahead of the five-year average pace needed to meet the WASDE estimate. Meanwhile, 2026/2027 export crop sales commitments continue to exceed historical averages. July crush increased from June and remained above the level recorded in July of last year.

As of Aug. 30, a smaller percentage of the crop is rated good to excellent compared with the same point last year. Dependent on if USDA raises its yield estimate ending stocks could potentially be adjusted in the upcoming WASDE report. Strong new-crop export commitments also affect export demand.

The September WASDE report has historically shown a greater likelihood of triggering a negative reaction in the soybean market. September Corn: What we’re watching ahead of WASDE

Corn exports have remained firm, with old-crop inspections similar to the August WASDE estimate and exceeding the five-year average at this point in the year. Meanwhile, 2026/2027 crop sales commitments are below the five-year average.

As of Aug. 30, a smaller percentage of the crop is rated good to excellent, compared to the same point last year. With deteriorating crop conditions and disappointing late-season yield estimates adjustments to the new-crop corn yield estimate may occur.

The September WASDE report has historically shown a greater likelihood of triggering a negative reaction in the corn market.
