After more than 7 years of trying, Governor Tony Evers was at Children’s Wisconsin today to sign a bill into law that extends Medicaid coverage for women after they have delivered for 12 months. Until this, Wisconsin, which only provided 60 days of Medicaid coverage after delivery, was only one of two states that had not extended this critical insurance coverage. Life-threatening conditions like hypertension, stroke and heart failure can develop several months after delivery. Having continuous access to healthcare for twelve months following the birth of a child can save lives of the women we hold near and dear to our hearts.

Huge shout outs to the advocates, health plans, and providers that have worked tirelessly to get this done, despite the roadblocks. This bipartisan bill prioritizes moms and babies by ensuring healthcare coverage during a critical period after childbirth. This is a smart, lifesaving investment in Wisconsin families, and a meaningful step forward for maternal health. As the signs convey, “healthy moms, healthy babies”.
