🚫 UNEXPECTED CHECK? IT MIGHT BE A SCAM!! 🚫

Getting a check you weren’t expecting can feel like a lucky surprise—but often, it’s actually check fraud. Here’s how the scam works 👇

💸 The Setup:
A scammer sends you a check, claiming it’s for a job, prize winnings, an overpayment, or a reimbursement. The check may look completely legitimate—and it might even appear to clear when you deposit it.

🔄 The Catch:
They’ll ask you to send part of the money back for fees, supplies, or a “refund.”

⚠️ The Reality:
When the check is later discovered to be counterfeit, the deposit is reversed—and you’re responsible for the full amount, including any money you already sent to the scammer.

✅ Bottom line: If you didn’t expect the check, don’t deposit it. When in doubt, contact your bank directly. Share this to help protect others!

‼️Stay Alert & Verify Before You Act — New Scam Warning ‼️

If someone calls you claiming to be from your bank, hang up and call your local branch immediately to verify.

Use the Key Safety Reminders in this article to protect yourself and educate your loved ones.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 29, 2026
Public Warning: Sophisticated Scam Results in Significant Financial Loss and possible attempted kidnapping.
On April 29, 2026, APD officers responded to a reported fraud incident involving a sophisticated scam that resulted in a substantial financial loss to a local victim.
The victim was initially contacted by an individual posing as a bank fraud department representative. After speaking with this individual, a second suspect contacted the victim and falsely claimed that the first caller was part of a larger criminal operation within the bank. The suspects used fear, urgency, and deception to manipulate the victim into withdrawing cash from her personal account.
The victim was instructed to handle the cash in a specific way, package it, and send it through delivery services. Suspects also arranged rideshare vehicles to the victim’s residence in an attempt to further their scheme. The victim ultimately refused to enter any vehicle, turned off her phone, contacted family members, and reported the incident to law enforcement.
During the investigation, it was discovered the suspects had gained access to the victim’s phone through a malicious link or application.
Key Safety Reminders for the Public:
• Do not click on links or download applications sent via text, email, or messaging apps claiming to be from banks or fraud departments. Always contact your financial institution directly using a verified phone number.
• Never send cash through the mail or delivery services. Legitimate institutions and law enforcement will never instruct you to do so.
• Law enforcement and financial institutions will not ask you to withdraw or move your own money as part of an investigation.
• Do not enter a vehicle or accept transportation from anyone you do not know or did not personally arrange.
If you receive suspicious communications or believe you may be the target of a scam, cease contact immediately and report it to the Amarillo Police Department.
Stay alert. Verify before you act.

Wellington State Bank employees from our Canadian and Dalhart branches had a great time working with local elementary students and teachers on National Teach Children to Save Day!

Our teams helped students learn the basics of budgeting, saving, and making smart financial decisions that can last a lifetime.

One of the day’s highlights was the Piggy Bank Boutique, where students got hands-on experience by shopping within a set budget—learning firsthand how to make thoughtful choices with their money.

We’re proud to support financial education in our communities and help students build strong money habits early. Thanks to the teachers and students for a fun and impactful day!

Special thanks to Canadian's Baker Elementary School and Ms. Barrow and Mrs. Smith at Dalhart Christian Academy for welcoming us to your classrooms!

Today is NATIONAL TEACH CHILDREN TO SAVE DAY!

Learning about money early helps set kids up for lifelong success. Understanding basics like saving, spending, and budgeting builds confidence and smart habits that last a lifetime.

At Wellington State Bank, financial education is a priority. We’re proud to be in our local schools, talking with students about banking and sharing age‑appropriate resources that make money concepts easy to understand and fun to learn.

Here are some simple ways to help kids learn about saving:

✅ Bring your child to Wellington State Bank to open their very own savings account!

✅ Encourage kids to set a savings goal (a toy, game, or fun activity)

✅ Use savings trackers and color them in as kids save to see progress and watch their money grow.

✅ Talk about wants vs. needs during everyday purchases

✅ Let kids earn money through age‑appropriate chores

✅ Teach them to save a portion of any money they receive

✅ Visit the bank often so kids experience and understand how banks work!

By starting these conversations early—at home and in the classroom—we’re helping empower the next generation to make informed financial decisions now and in the future. 💙

Stop by any of our locations to get started

💰 Big savings start with small steps 💰

Saving money doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. In fact, starting slow is often the smartest way to build lasting habits—and real rewards.

Try these simple ways to begin:

➡ Start with a small, automatic transfer each payday (even $10–$25 adds up!)

➡ Create a separate savings account so your progress stays visible

➡ Set a short-term goal—like an emergency fund or a fun reward—to stay motivated

➡ Increase your savings gradually as your comfort grows

✨ The reward? Less stress, more confidence, and financial freedom over time.

At Wellington State Bank, we’re here to help you every step of the way—from easy-to-open savings accounts to personal guidance that fits your goals. Because saving should feel doable, supportive, and rewarding.

Start small today. Your future self will thank you. 💚
