We’ve been fortunate with a milder winter so far, but with a storm on the horizon, it's time to prepare your home to prevent frozen pipes and avoid costly repairs.
Protect your home with these tips:
• Insulate pipes: Especially those in crawl spaces and attics.
• Use heat tape or heat cables: Follow manufacturer instructions carefully.
• Seal leaks: Prevent cold air from seeping in around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes.
• Disconnect outdoor hoses: Shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.
• Let water drip: A trickle of warm water can prevent pipes from freezing.
• Maintain thermostat settings: Keep it at the same temperature day and night.
• Open cabinet doors: Allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks.
If you're traveling:
•Set thermostat no lower than 55°F (12°C).
• Ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily.
• Shut off and drain the water system: Note that this may deactivate your sprinkler system.
If your pipes freeze:
• Keep faucets turned on.
• Avoid open flames: Never use a torch to thaw pipes.
• Use a hair dryer cautiously: Ensure you're not near standing water or flammable materials.
• Shut off the water supply: Ensure everyone knows where the main shutoff valve is located.
Stay safe and protect your home this winter!
