Since February, four insurance companies have asked Florida officials to let them cancel or not renew customer policies, including Universal Insurance Company of North America, Southern Fidelity Insurance Company, and Gulfstream Property and Casualty Insurance Company.

What can you do if your policy is dropped?

Call an insurance agent to help find you another company.
Apply for Citizens Insurance, a state-owned insurance company. It typically covers homes denied by private insurance.
Use a surplus line insurer. The insurance companies aren’t licensed but are still valid carriers. They are subject to different regulations.

Why are insurance companies hiking rates so steeply?
