Forecasters are predicting a cold blast this coming weekend, which could increase the risk for frozen and burst pipes. Starting Friday and extending to Monday, we are likely to see sustained below-freezing temperatures. Here are some tips that may help prevent these risks from becoming reality:
Leave the heat on
• Set the thermostat and keep it at the same temperature day and night—especially if a home or unit is unoccupied.
• Smart thermostat? We recommend temporarily reprogramming smart thermostats to remain at a constant temperature.
Stop the water flow
• Drain and shut off all outside spigots.
• Mark the main water supply line at r home or business so it can be easily identified and shut off in the event of an emergency.
• If going away, be sure to shut off the water supply line to the washing machine.
Warm air in, cold air out
• Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
• If you have an attached garage, keep the doors shut. Cold wind can increase the likelihood of a frozen pipe
