“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin

There’s a big difference between a benefits broker and a benefits consultant.

A broker gives you a spreadsheet. A consultant gives you strategy.

If you're building a long-term, cost-conscious health plan, education and engagement aren’t optional — they’re essential.

At Matson & Kellogg, we don’t just present quotes. We help our clients build smarter benefits programs through hands-on education, cost containment, onboarding support, and real-time data insights.

That’s the difference between checking a box and changing the game.

Who loves movies?!🍿🎥✋

Have you ever watched a movie a million times and only just realized what something in the movie actually meant?
Well, same here.

I’ve seen G.I. Jane more times than I care to admit (2:30 AM insomnia spiral, anyone?), and while Demi Moore looks absolutely incredible in that movie, it was something else that really got me this time around…

There’s that moment where Viggo Mortensen’s character recites a short poem by D.H. Lawrence:

“I never saw a wild thing feel sorry for itself.A small bird will drop frozen dead from a boughwithout ever having felt sorry for itself.”

I used to just think, “That’s deep.”But the other night, I actually Googled it. And once I understood it, I realized how much truth there was in that poem. It’s about self-pity and I’ll let you look up the rest if you don’t already know it.

Back in March, I attended a wonderful event in San Diego hosted by ParetoHealth, full of brilliant speakers, doctors, and professionals. One of the doctors said something that landed harder than I expected:

👉 Obesity is a complex chronic disease.

Now, I’ve worked in the health insurance industry for 20+ years.
I knew the CDC stats:

👉6 in 10 Americans have a chronic illness.
👉4 in 10 have two or more.

But somehow, I never connected the dots to myself. I always thought “chronic illness” meant conditions like heart disease, diabetes, lupus or MS… not this. Not me.
Maybe it was denial. Maybe some self-pity. Maybe a bit of naivety. But in that moment, I realized that I’m part of the statistic.

For many years, I’ve struggled with my weight and it got even harder for me in my mid 30’s, especially with the career I have where you’re tied to a desk. That quote from the movie, combined with other moments I’ve had since the start of this year, helped reinforce a shift in my mindset. I’m finally on a journey of self-awareness and taking back control of the one thing that has held me back for so long: My weight.

It’s not easy. Some days, self-pity still tries to sneak in. But I’m working on it. If you’re on a health and weight loss journey too, I’m rooting for you!💚

Fun Fact for my Upstate NY/Northern NY Friends: Viggo Mortensen is from Watertown, NY! (Of course…I had to look him up too! 😂☺️)

I remember when I made my first national TV appearance at 3 AM and I absolutely, absolutely, absolutely blew it!

I was live on air, selling a bubble bath product. It was my big moment. The kind of thing you prep for, rehearse, and hope you nail.

And I did nail it… kind of.
We almost sold out. 🙌
But I also said the word “absolutely” close to ten times in five minutes. 😳

I didn’t even notice until I watched the replay.
Then came the best part:
My kids saw it and said,

“Mom, we absolutely got it.”
Honestly? Brutal. 😂
Looking back, maybe it was a good thing it aired at 3 AM. Fewer witnesses. But the moment stuck with me.

Now that we’re in a world full of virtual meetings, Zoom calls, and video pitches, I still get those same butterflies.
Even with notes in front of me, I tend to ad-lib, drift, and sometimes go full-on word salad mode. I throw in stories. I chase side points. I always come back around, but not without a detour or two.

And then there are the catchphrases.
You ever catch yourself using one over and over again without realizing it?

Yesterday, I was in a virtual meeting where someone said “right?” after nearly every sentence. And by the end, I couldn’t focus on the content. I was mentally counting the “rights.”
I almost said, “You’re right!” just to break the loop. 😅

Public speaking is still hard whether it’s a conference, stage or a Teams call.

And even the most seasoned pros have their filler words, quirks, or phrases they fall back on.

So let’s open it up:

👉 Do you have a “go-to” word or phrase you catch yourself saying all the time in meetings?

👉 Have you ever had a funny or awkward moment during a presentation or Zoom call?

👉 Any tricks to staying on point without going full word salad?

Let’s hear it. We can absolutely laugh (and learn) together. 😉

In a historic move, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to finally stop the practice of Americans paying dramatically higher drug prices than the rest of the world.

Joined by top healthcare leaders including Dr. Marty Makary, RFK Jr., Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya this action marks a major step forward in protecting American patients from a broken, noncompetitive pricing system.

For decades, U.S. families have shouldered up to 10 to 15 times the cost for the exact same medications available in other countries. While European governments force drug companies to offer low prices, Americans have been left footing the bill often at the cost of their retirement, homes, and financial stability.

That ends now.

This new executive order:
✅ Equalizes drug prices globally so Americans stop subsidizing the world
✅ Pushes allies to pay their fair share
✅ Protects innovation while restoring market fairness
✅ Helps patients avoid financial devastation from medication costs

One surgical oncologist put it best:
“We didn’t take an oath to heal patients only to watch their lives be destroyed financially.”

This action isn’t just about policy. It’s about dignity. It’s about protecting the American people and creating a healthcare system that makes sense morally and economically.

👏 Thank you to the administration and every healthcare leader who had the courage to take action on what so many others only talked about.

Let’s finally fix this for the patients, families, and future generations who deserve better.

At 9:00 AM today, President Trump is expected to sign an Executive Order aimed at reducing prescription drug prices in the U.S. by 30% to 80%—a move that could be a game-changer for both employers and everyday Americans.

For far too long, U.S. businesses and employees have been forced to pay five to ten times more for the same drugs sold abroad—manufactured in the same facilities, by the same companies.

That’s not just unfair. It’s unsustainable.

If implemented successfully, this Executive Order could:

Lower employer health plan costs over time
Ease the financial burden on employees at the pharmacy
Drive real reform in a system that desperately needs it
At Matson & Kellogg, we’ve worked with hundreds of small and mid-sized employers looking for ways to reduce costs without sacrificing care. This move could be a powerful step in the right direction.

We’ll be watching this closely and we’ll continue fighting for real, affordable healthcare solutions for the businesses and families we serve.

📩 Reach out if you’d like to talk about what this could mean for your business or your renewal strategy.
