One of my biggest pet peeves when talking with contractors:

“I have 5, 6, 7 trucks. I can’t afford higher liability limits on all of them.”

That’s not always true.

This is a real example from one of our clients: a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 carrying $1 Million CSL.

Total annual premium for this vehicle: $3,825.

Good coverage doesn’t automatically mean an outrageous premium.

A big part of what we do is help contractors clean up their insurance profile, identify available risk discounts, and structure their commercial auto correctly so we can pursue stronger coverage at a premium that makes sense.

If you’re running several trucks with lower limits simply because you assume higher limits are unaffordable, it may be worth taking another look.

She was telling me about babysitting recently, which somehow turned into a conversation about my first-ever babysitter.

I told her that when I was a little boy, I moved to Texas from Carson City, Nevada.

She wasn't buying it.

So naturally, I had to find photographic evidence.

The phone usually rings after the damage is already done.

Recently, I spoke with a plumbing contractor who had just been non-renewed by his commercial auto carrier.

The reason?

An unlisted driver was involved in an accident that resulted in more than $100,000 in damages.

One accident.

One overlooked detail.

Now he wasn't just dealing with a claim.

He was trying to figure out who would insure his fleet moving forward.

Here's the lesson.

Insurance companies don't just insure your trucks.

They insure your processes.

Who drives them.

How they're managed.

Whether your business is keeping up with the growth it's experiencing.

As your company grows...

Drivers change.

Every Plumbing & HVAC company has someone they can't afford to lose.

The owner.

The operations manager.

The lead estimator.

The technician everyone asks for by name.

The problem is...

Most companies insure their trucks.

They insure their buildings.

They insure their equipment.

But they never insure the person holding everything together.

I recently helped one of my plumbing clients put a Key Person Life Insurance plan in place.

It wasn't because anyone expected something bad to happen.

It was because they asked a simple question:

"If something happened to me tomorrow... what would happen to the business?"

Could payroll still be made?

Would the company have the cash to recruit a replacement?

Would the surviving family have time to make thoughtful decisions instead of rushed ones?

Would the business have enough financial breathing room to continue serving customers?

Those aren't comfortable questions.

But they're leadership questions.

The best business owners I've met don't prepare because they expect the worst.

They prepare because too many people depend on them.

Employees.

Underwriters answer your calls.

Clients introduce you to other contractors.

People stop asking,

"Can I trust you?"

And start asking,

"When can we get started?"

Trust isn't soft.

It's one of the hardest business assets to build.

And one of the easiest to lose.

In commercial insurance...

Just like in Plumbing & HVAC...

Your reputation arrives before you do.

That's why I believe trust isn't part of the business.

It is the business.

I keep reviewing commercial auto policies for plumbing and HVAC contractors...

And one endorsement is missing far more often than I expected.

It's called Hired Auto & Non-Owned Auto coverage.

Most business owners don't think twice about it because they assume their commercial auto policy covers everything involving a vehicle.

Sometimes it doesn't.

Think about how often these situations happen:

An employee uses their personal truck to pick up materials.
Your service van is in the shop, so you rent one for the week.
You borrow a truck to keep a job on schedule.

Those aren't unusual situations.

They're part of running a plumbing or HVAC business.

Yet they're also some of the most commonly overlooked exposures I come across when reviewing commercial auto policies.

I'm not saying every contractor automatically needs these endorsements.

I am saying they're worth a conversation.

One of the biggest surprises in insurance isn't discovering what your policy covers.

It's discovering what it doesn't.

When I review a commercial auto policy, I don't just look at the premium. I look for the gaps that could cost a business owner far more than the money they saved.

"This is the cost of building a successful business over 20 years while smoking and neglecting my health."

Those were the words one of my plumbing clients shared with me this past week.

He wasn't looking for sympathy.

He was simply telling me the truth.

It made me stop and think.

As insurance brokers, we spend a lot of time talking with plumbing and HVAC owners about protecting their businesses from fires, lawsuits, accidents, and equipment breakdowns.

But there's one asset that's often overlooked.

The owner.

In the trades, it's easy to convince yourself you'll start taking care of your health after the next busy season. After you hire another technician. After you hit your next revenue goal.

But those goals never stop moving.

I've met incredible contractors who built thriving companies through grit, sacrifice, and relentless work. Unfortunately, some paid for that success with their health.

Your company needs you.

Your employees need you.

But the people who need you most are waiting for you at home.

Build the business you're proud of.

Just don't sacrifice the one person who made it all possible.

The most valuable thing you'll ever own isn't your company. It's your health.

My faithful Hyundai Elantra is about to roll over 300,000 miles.

Most people would probably see an old car.

I don't.

I see thousands of conversations.

Hundreds of visits to plumbing and HVAC companies.

Early mornings.

Late evenings.

Coffee on the way to appointments.

Conversations that turned into friendships.

Customers who became friends.

Businesses that trusted me to help protect what they spent years building.

That odometer doesn't remind me of how far I've driven.

It reminds me how fortunate I've been.

Because every mile represents someone who gave me their time.

Trusted my advice.

Or simply sat across the table and shared their story.

Insurance has never really been about policies.

For me...

It's always been about people.

Here's to the next conversation.

The next handshake.

And hopefully...

The next 100,000 miles.

They're the first one to the shop.

The last one to leave.

Customers ask for them by name.

They solve problems no one else can.

If they quit tomorrow...

You'd feel it immediately.

There's just one problem.

They have three speeding tickets.

Two at-fault accidents.

And a driving record you'd never accept from a new applicant.

So what do you do?

This is one of the toughest leadership decisions a contractor will ever face.

Because you're not choosing between a good employee and a bad employee.

You're choosing between an exceptional technician...

And the risk they bring every time they get behind the wheel.

A poor driving record doesn't just increase the chance of an accident.

It can make your business harder to insure.

It can increase your premiums.
