Today is International Dog Day, and while we all love a cute puppy photo, I want to take a moment to honor the dogs that provide much more than just a wagging tail. They provide a lifeline.

In our communities many neighbors rely on the incredible partnership of Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals. These dogs aren’t just companions; they are essential to a life lived with independence and joy.

🛡️ The Service Dog: A Trained Partner
These "hero dogs" are trained for years to perform specific, life-saving tasks.

Medical Alert: Sensing a drop in blood sugar or the onset of a seizure.

Mobility Support: Helping with balance or retrieving items for those with physical limitations.

Guiding: Acting as the eyes or ears for those with sensory impairments.

🕊️ The Emotional Support Dog: A Vital Healer
Sometimes the greatest disability is the one you can't see. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) play a massive role in wellness, especially for our seniors and veterans:

🛑 Working Past 65? The Rules Just Changed for 2026!

If you’re 65+ and still rocking the 9-to-5, you might be planning to delay Medicare. But with the major 2026 Medicare updates now in effect, the "wait and see" approach could be more expensive than you think.

✅ The Good News (If you delay):

Keep Your Employer Plan: If your company has 20+ employees and the coverage is "creditable," you can often keep it and skip the Part B premium ($202.90/month for most in 2026).

No Penalties: As long as your work coverage meets Medicare’s standards, you won't face late-enrollment penalties later.

⚠️ The 2026 "Watch Outs":

The "Creditable Coverage" Trap: Medicare Part D now has a $2,100 out-of-pocket cap and no "Donut Hole." Because Medicare's drug coverage is now much better, some employer plans may no longer qualify as "creditable." If your work plan isn't creditable, you could be racking up lifetime penalties without knowing it!

The Math Has Changed: With Part B premiums at $202.90 and new lower drug costs in Medicare, many of my clients are finding that switching to Medicare is actually cheaper than staying on their high-deductible employer plan.

Enrollment Gaps: Missing your Special Enrollment window when you finally do retire can leave you without any coverage for months.
