Beware of Scam Using U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) Telephone Number

What You Need to Know

The HHS OIG confirmed that the HHS OIG Hotline telephone number is being used as part of a telephone scam.

Scammers call individuals and claim to be HHS OIG Hotline employees. The caller ID has been manipulated to show individuals the real hotline information: HHS OIG Hotline 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477). The HHS OIG does not use the hotline telephone number to make outgoing calls.

Action Item
Advise your clients that they should not answer telephone calls showing HHS OIG Hotline 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477).

Those who believe they may be a victim of the telephone scam should contact the HHS OIG Hotline at 1.800.HHS.TIPS (1.800.447.8477) or email [email protected]. It is still safe to call the HHS OIG Hotline to report fraud.

Individuals may also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1.877.FTC.HELP (1.877.382.4357).
