Here are some tips to prevent your pipes freezing and bursting while we are experiencing these extraordinary cold temperatures in NE Iowa:

- Insulate your water pipes that are in unheated areas of your house (Crawl space, Basements, etc.)
- Keep a steady drip of water from your faucets that are located near exterior walls or far away from your main water valve.
- Open cabinet and vanity doors to warm pipes under your sink.
- Make sure the water to your outside water spigots is shut off.

If your pipes do freeze, you can perform the following steps to prevent your pipes from bursting:

- Turn off the main water shut off valve
- Check with a neighbor to see if their water is still running. If it is not, then the water main is most likely damaged. If it is, then your pipes are most likely frozen
- Open all faucets up to let the water remaining in the pipes run through.
-Apply slow heat where you think the pipes are frozen with a hair dryer. DO NOT use open flames like a blow torch or kerosene heater.
- Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn water back on and check all joints and piping for cracks and leaks.
