Iowa native, Norman Borlaug is credited with saving over 2 billion people from starvation. Bremer County AITC Coordinator Sue Cook recently visited St. Paul second grade with an activity about Borlaug's super seeds. Borlaug grew up in Cresco, Iowa and as a young boy was interested in how plants grew. Later, he was hired to develop "super seed" plants that could be grown in countries such as Mexico and in Africa. The goal was to teach native farmers how to grow food to feed their families. He set up labs in the countries and created native corn and wheat plants.
Second graders listened to the book: The Kid Who Changed the World. This book explains Norman's connections with Henry Wallace and George Washington Carver. Then, students got to thresh wheat kernels from stalks and grind the wheat berries into wheat flour. Each class was left with a box of Wheat Thins. Rumor has it that Mrs. Boots planned to bake some cookies with the flour.

Bremer County AITC Coordinator Sue Cook visited 3rd grade classes at North Ridge Elementary School in Waverly with an activity about watersheds.
Watersheds are the areas that water flows over on its way to the main water source in the area. Waverly is in the Cedar River watershed. Using an Iowa road map, we traced the Cedar all the way to the Mississippi River. Then, it's on the way to the Gulf of America.
The problems we are facing relate to pollution entering the water source. Farmers use several methods to keep pollution out of the water: cover crops, terracing, grass waterways, and no-till. Homeowners also need to be more cautious about chemicals applied to their lawns and even dumping materials such as oil and detergents.
The main message we need to pass on is that we are all stewards of the land.
Third graders made their own watershed areas using paper and markers. We sprayed their watersheds to find flowing rivers. Then, we added litter glitter to show how pollution travels downstream! They were amazed at how easily their water sources filled with glitter.
