It won't.

You pick it. Or you don't.

Before tools were loaded and doors were locked, Roo and Bear got ready with me.

Roo was always first. Sitting tall. Eyes locked in. He treated work like belonging. Like if you showed up with joy and intent, you earned your place in the day.

Bear took his time then and still does. He doesn’t hurry because he doesn’t need to. Senior. Alpha. Grounded. He was that dog then, and he’s that dog now. Calm isn’t a phase for him. It’s who he is.

They were different dogs in the same moment of my life.

Roo taught me how to show up with heart.
Bear teaches me how to stay steady.

Roo’s story is out now.
The first in the series Dogs and the Lessons I Needed Most.

Bear’s lesson is still unfolding.

What Doesn’t Follow Him In

Bear is asleep on the floor, stretched out like the day hasn’t asked anything of him. That’s because it hasn’t.

He doesn’t know what’s happening beyond this room, and whatever exists outside it doesn’t follow him in. Except for the few leaves I didn’t get. Those always seem to find their way onto the floor.

Most of us don’t get that kind of separation.

Lately, it feels like you can say something simple and still get hit with certainty in return. Not conversation. Certainty. Someone else already decided how they feel, and there isn’t much room left for what you were trying to say.

Living in that all the time wears on you.

At some point, it’s okay to step away from the stream of it. Let the room be quiet again. Not as a statement. Just as a break.

There’s more strength in that than we tend to admit. Sitting with nothing demanding your attention isn’t avoidance. It’s steadiness.

Bear doesn’t need anything to hold his attention. He isn’t scrolling or searching. He’s just there, on the floor, and it’s enough.

Some things are out of control. Choosing when to be unreachable, even briefly, is still a choice you get to make.

As for Bear, his health has been steady. We’re grateful to everyone who checks in.

He sleeps. The leaves stay. Nothing else gets in.
