October is Fire Prevention month, which is a great opportunity to make sure your home is equipped to alert you in the event of a fire.

1) The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that smoke alarms should be installed on each level of your home, including the basement, and installed inside of every bedroom and outside of each sleeping area.

2) Check batteries and power sources regularly.

3) Have a working fire extinguisher available in your kitchen.

4) Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 10 years or according to manufacturer’s instructions.

5) Smoke alarms with flashing lights and/or vibrating pads are alternatives for the hearing impaired.
